Is there a screen grab anywhere of a female crewman wearing pants? I remember seeing one, but I can't remember where I saw her. As fast as the editing was in XI, I'm sure she was in the background of one shot for a fourth of a second.

Why are some women only happy if they look like men? Do you really think Uhura would look better as a unisex Battlestar Gallactica grunt?
TOS originally had women in unfeminine pants and it was a woman's idea to ditch them for feminine skirts.
Trousers only look good on a woman if casually worn. Add trousers however to a suit or uniform and they look like Charlie Chaplin. "Oh! look I'm liberated Hillary "Charlie" Clinton.

The simple reason is that women look best if they don't ape men.

As for skirts being impractical, that is perfectly true if you are mountaineering, skiing etc. Not if you are a communications officer with your bottom in a chair.

This thread is also pretty stupid, as Uhura wore an awful grey jumpsuit with pants during training, the female training officers all wore pants with their awful dull grey suits and loads of female crewmembers can be seen in Charlie Chaplin pants on the Enterprise.

This movie has been the most successful Trek movie ever, why make a change just to please some lobby group who have a problem with femininity?

If Uhura does have to wear pants when beaming down to some planet in a later movie, leggings & boots would look better than mens trousers.

Hey the girl in the miniskirt in the screencap has long sleeves! So it's just that one female variant uniform that hides your rank.

While men only have one choice of duty uniform on the Enterprise.
    Women have three:
    1) Male long sleeve and pants.
    2) Female long sleeve and skirt.
    3) Female short sleeve and skirt.

Pretty much like real life businesses. In a US professional office environment, men wear pants (slacks or khaki's if they're lucky), a dress shirt (or a Polo on Casual Friday) and shoes (dress). Women can wear pants (slacks, capris, etc.), skirts (long or short), dresses, low heels, high heels, flats, open toe, wedges, etc.

Apply this to starfleet, and women have a ton of choices, while the guys are stuck with the shirt/pant combo.

Of course, since this is neither the actual military or real business, none of the outfits are actually practical for landing party duty. How does a cotton shirt and knickers help in changing enrivonements? There should be "landing party gear" consisting of protective clothing or an environment suit. For all members. But beyond that, the Trek movie was in no way intented to be "realistic". It's an homage to the stylistic feel of the original series. Why else would they go from Robou's Next Gen style clothing to TOS style? The bridge is straight out of Buck Rogers (the Gil Gerard version) complete with garish colors, winky blinkies and a breakable glass window right up front, which will blow the entire command staff out into space if someone farts. The uniform tunics are bright and loud with little insignia patterns, and the ladies wear skirts. It's not functional, it's visual.

Realistic Star Trek would be quite drab and boring in deed.

Why is being 'realistic' so important to some people? They want the 21st century in the 23rd...makes no sence.

Yep, I don't see what some people are so hung up on chicks being feminine. It's like it's GREAT to be feminist, but SHAME on you for being feminine.
In my fictions, my main character, Cassy, wears pants often, BUT they are the form fitting kind...like tight fitting jeans or leggings. Something flattering.

One thing though....skirts and Hillary 'keg-legs' Clinton do not mix. :rommie:

ummm..no. She is in skirts because this is a movie not reality..and I like seeing her skin (which was JJs reason for putting her in a skirt..sex/skin sells..and XI sold a lot of tickets)..

    and..she's hot!!

I agree with the OP. Skirts are impractical. And we've already seen exactly the same uniforms for men and women.

Its a movie. They don't care about practical aspects; kind of like why the girls in superhero movies wear tight outfits with camel toes galore... its called $$$$.

    Duh..

M'Sharak...that pic doesn't count in my books. But there are multiple other scenes where we see women in trousers. That's just not one of the better ones.

I do agree, the miniskirted uniforms are very inappropriate and unpractical. HOWEVER, I can understand their decision. To some people it'd be like Daisy Duke without her Daisy Dukes, per se.

  12. I don't care if women wear skirts or pants. I mean sure the legs looked good... but Star Trek is too goodie-goodie to show any real nasty hot sex anyways, so until it does, nothing it does in PG-13 land is going to titillate me anyways.

Not sure what you saw...but Pine's view of Uhura's panties was a real crowd pleaser where I was...and I liked what I saw...

More panty scenes is what we need..and more women in them...as 'leering' as can be!!!!

It's amazing how many of you want borderline porn in Trek.

    nah...not porn...

But Rusty? Guess what...sex sells. And as long as its done in a playful way, as it was in XI, then it helps create that "hipness" that Star Trek is in definate need of..

The fact that some of our more "gooberish" trek-fans don't like the sex scenes, at all, it just proves to me that JJ knows exactly what he is doing...

    And I'm all for it...

    The more, the better.

And we are sci-fi fans, we're SUPPOSED to want to see more skin. :bolian: Some of the costumes in TOS were close to that, anyhow. :p

Yeah, a good solution to that would be to put some shoulder tabs on for the purpose of displaying rank, a la the short-sleeved uniforms from TMP.

I dunno, a girl in a necktie can get my motor running.

Cheeky way of saying I disagree with your entire argument.

I NEVER said that it should have no sexy scenes in it. It was fine what they put in Trek XI. But too much of it will definitely detract the quality of the movie. I don't want to see Trek stoop to lows such as "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" and "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." Keep in mind neither movie was well-received by critics.

    The Castellan:
"The more, the better" huh? Well, that sure didn't help "Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle" any. And it didn't favor well with critics regarding "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

And that comment about sci-fi fans is extremely stereotypical.

The skirts are iconic but I do think that young and middle-aged female should not be required to wear short skirts (perhaps I'm being naive to think that they will cast middle-aged women in the seqel - with Kirk's instant promotion it has become like Starfleet Acadamy Musical).

What the sequel needs is more women in speaking parts in positions of authority. So all spare captains, admirals, and politicians should be women. They could do this and still be left with more male characters because the imbalance is currently so great.

Chapel is likely to get a supporting role in the next one and I'm hoping that Rand is going to be recruited as part of Kirk's security team. I'd also vote for Ann Mulhall to feature. She was senior in rank, an engineer, and a scientist in one of the easiest disciplines to feature in a sci-fi show (astrobiology). pants or not, she seems to me to be the knd of female crewman who could raise the bar for the women in the sequel.

Like every man in this forum I can't deny that I prefer the short skirts :), but I also realize that they are sexist and a little disrespectful (especially the TOS skirts, which were almost unacceptably short by today's standarts).

So yes, it might be a good idea.
