HELP before I go insane (puter):

Please, please, please for the love of god can someone help me... F-ing microsoft are just sending me round in circles.

My mum's Windows Mail on her laptop (Vista) has suddenly stopped working.

I've checked all the settings - correct - and not only will it not send and receive it totally stops the internet working on the whole computer.

I can find no solution or even a site where I can download the program again and start all over.

Any solutions? I beg you...

Try creating a new mail profile for her... it could be under the mail settings in the control panel (I work with XP, so I don't know my way around Vista as well).

What you want is Windows Live applications. Download the Mail app (and anything else you want, if you get Messenger you can play bowling with me and chat with me on web cam). The Live Mail replaces Windows Mail.

The Windows Mail in Vista was supposed to be actually temporary and the Live Mail application is the more upgraded and supported one.

The Live Mail is a better client, it will automaticly set gmail or hotmail or other webmail accounts and let you download your messages from all mail accounts onto your computer (and yes, other clients will do that, but other built in Windows clients won't).

You can import all your old messages and address book after installation.

If Live Mail doesn't work, in the same way Windows Mail isn't working, there is something wrong with your network settings.

^ Yep downloaded Live Mail and the same thing happens.

Have done a whole system virus check with AVG that hasn't shown up anything but I was thinking virus, which is often the answer when crazy things start happening on the puter.

I'll second that and it's probably more feasible than my suggestion of getting a Mac.

I had a problem once where Outlook and Internet Explorer would stop working after a patch had been performed.

Initially I had blamed Microsoft for faulty patches, but the problem was with my Norton Antivirus. After the patch, Norton thought that the program had become infected and was silently blocking access.

To get things working again, all I had to do was remove and then add back again the programs to the permitted list.

This is no help at all, but I've seen this before and cannot for the life of me remember how it's fixed. I apologise. It's something to do with the settings, the mail group perhaps or the inbox/outbox locations. I should know this, but I hate Mail because it's so damn fiddly. Sorry.

As for removing it:
Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs --> Add/Remove Windows Components.

Now, I'm not using Windows Mail (XP), so it's not listed there, but I can remove Outlook and Messenger there, and logically assume you can do the same. Just keep in mind to have an installation disk handy or System Restore running.

Hope that helps. Apologies again for vagueness.

Have you tried using a restore point (one from prior to any of the issues)? This might be your best option if a virus/malware messed with your computer.

The box that says 'disconnect after sending and receiving' had been ticked.

Once I unticked this... problem solved
