True, although the even more glaring difference is that we use health insurance to pay for foreseeable and planned things like dental cleaning, prescriptions and hospital stays for pregnancies. The problem with comparing health insurance to car insurance is that no one really has to drive. Driving is a privilege and a choice. One that you can learn to live without. As I have for the last six years in fact. You cannot do without your health.
Why not? How is any insurance company supposed to remain solvent when anybody that already has a million dollars in upcoming expenses can sign up, pay some comparatively infinitesimal fee and immediately get hundreds of thousands of dollars in return? You can't sign up for homeowners insurance while your house is on fire.Nope but insurance companies shouldn't deny coverage nor use pre-existing conditions to prevent people from getting health care.

No Americans shouldn't be required to by health insurance, it should be provided by the government as a function of society. Just pay your taxes instead of insurance premiums and move on. If the idiots that are Republicans would have had an honest debate and discussion maybe we could have gotten that. Instead we got this mess.
Freedom for the wealthy with a slim hope of one day succeeding doesn't sound much like freedom, but it is how the Republican party operates.

This deal was cut behind closed doors with payoffs and bribes. The republicans weren't involved because they were not allowed to be. The libs OWN this disaster.
As far as the second part of your statement, the dems idea of helping the poor is to keep them dependent upon the government. Give em juuuuust enough to keep them voting for the dems. That's no way to live and it's most certainly not freedom. The sad part is that some people think they are really trying to help them. I'd rather take my shot at being rich by providing for muself than beg for a block of cheese.

This bill will reduce the debt by 130 billion IIRC.

Then explain to us why countries like, say, France, Germany, hell all of western Europe have a healthier population, enjoy the same freedoms you Americans do and have higher standards of living even though they have mandatory/public health insurance?
Or is it that there might be a correlation?

The GOP alternative, of course, consists of "let them die."

Well, first off I am a conservative, not a republican. There is a difference.
And most of us are for social safety nets. We just don't believe that the government is our parent. That's really not going to help anyone long term.

On this issue, there is no difference between a conservative and a Republican as far as I care. Both oppose anything resembling universal health coverage.
How are skyrocketing insurance premiums and health care costs going to "help anyone long term"? Please, riddle me that.

We've been over this before. Americans are special. Just because other countries can do something effectively doesn't mean we can. Evidently, we are far too stupid to do anything right.
