I think it would be great.
More Data like androids, a working soliton wave...
Damn, you beat me to it.A genetically-engineered humanoid black duck frozen since the Twentieth Century, his humanoid pig cadet...
The next Trek series really should take place in the 25th century (in the prime universe) about 10-20 years after Voyager.
It does not matter what century the show is in as long as it's well done!
I wouldn't mind a show set a generation after the destruction of Romulus with a Romulan character as one of the leads (Either in the Eccleston/Doctor Who mold or in the brooding/sexy Vampire mold that is so popular right now).

I'd either like to see a 25th century show, or an animated series of some kind. IMO, either of those would be more successful than anything else they could come up with.

Not really, because any series--regardless of setting--will have so called "cannon cops" because Trek has always had them and always will. Even if Trek completely started over from scratch tomorrow, it'll only start new debates by new people over new canon. The only way to avoid canon issues is to make sure that nothing links to anything, but then that defeats the purpose of a series. It does not matter what century the show is in as long as it's well done! Having it in the 25th century helps keep it away from all the cannon cops out there.![]()
Which could be easily a non-issue if a new group of writers and producers come in and simply don't copy the "Berman-era" way of storytelling. The level of tech in any Trek series is irrelevant because it will always just boil down to PROPULSION, WEAPONS, and DEFENSE SYSTEM with only silly name changes to tell 'em apart. Anything else depends on how fanboyish or geeky the writers and producers are.One problem is there would have to be a way to reduce the level of almost magical technology. When we last left the 24th century they had badge shaped self transporters..jeesh.
