Honor Harrington

The Honorverse stuff can be fun. I have just gotten sick of how much of a Mary Sue that Honor has become.

Baen died? Well, maybe they will finally update the Baen forums to some real software instead of that newsgroup crap.

Agree with the Mary Sue comment. What's her full title now, or does the posting field word limit not allow it to be spelled out? :borg:

I loved his first three Honor books, the other seem to be full of Clancy like over writing. I just reread his Starfire books and recommend the first two for anyone who like space opera. Unfortunately the 3rd and 4th abandoned all character development and spent 100s of pages detailing space battles (great if you like that stuff...repetitive in my mind)

Doesn't Weber combine both sets of titles sometimes?
"Dame Lady Admiral yaddayadda..."

Admiral of the Fleet and Captain HMS Unconquered Lady Dame Honor Stephanie Alexander-Harrington, Steadholder Harrington, Duchess Harrington, Countess White Haven.

According to Wiki, in any case.

Plus the only human able to communicate with treecats, the only person of her time to master hip-shooting a Colt 1911, the first "alien" Steadholder on Grayson... on and on and on...

The only one able to share her treecat's empathic sense, I would say. Now that they've worked out the whole sign language thing (which wasn't actually Honor's idea, for once), simple communication is more widespread.

Plus, if she were in Star Trek, she'd be the first to defeat the Kobayashi Maru Test by killing so many Klingons that the computer would give up in squeamishness, would have beat down Khan in single combat, would have destroyed V'ger, the Probe, and the Borg all at the same time (while killing most of Starfleet in the process) and would have kicked Kirk's ass after she found him hiding under her roomie's bed.

Just as well she has her own universe.

I read the first two books and started on the third in the series during the summer. I might finish the series when I get more time. I found the books I read entertaining but slightly repetitive.

I've never understood the desire to start anywhere other than the beginning.

If you like the series, wouldn't having a large number of books to look forward to be a good thing? And if you don't, who cares which one you read?
Well, true on both counts, but the first book in a long series (I assume) like this one, may not be the "best" place to start the series. Maybe the first few books of a series aren't that good and can be skipped. Who knows? But it does sounds like the concensus here is that I should start from the first book.

Funny, I almost bought "On Basilisk Station" instead of "Ashes". Should have stuck with my first thought. I think I'll go pick up "Station" this week-end.

Thanks folks.

My first harrington book was the universe one called storm from the shadow with Michelle Henke as the main character when that inspired me to hear (audio books) how they got to that point.

A rather funny quote from At All Costs.....

"Well, you've already got the Parliamentary Medal of Valor, a knighthood---although, now that I think about it, we're going to be promoting you to knight grand cross this afternoon, I believe---a duchy, a mansion, a baseball team---whatever that is---your own personal starship, a multibillion-dollar business empire, and a steading." Queen Elizabeth shrugged. "With all that, deciding what to give you is getting a bit complicated. So I decided to give you back your white beret."

^^^
A nice moment, because Honor would probably give all that other stuff up voluntarily just to have the white beret.
