All this TWOK talking got me thinking...

Was there ever any back story on Carol Marcus? Does anyone remember?

Just some retconning that she was the little bond lab tech that Mitchell refered to in WNMHGB. Kirk almost married her and she is blond. nothing official onscreen.

Marcus also appears in the first two books in the Genesis Wave series (really, the only two worth reading). I don't remember if they filled in much backstory, but they certainly answer what Dr. Marcus was doing in the wake of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

An early version of the script has a scene with Kirk trying to remember whether he had sex with her, sat on her toilet, or was shot through the scrotum with a musket ball that left his body and entered her abdomen.

She also appeared in the game 25th Anniversary on the ARK-7 station, conducting the early phases of Genesis stage 1. In the process the staff apparently created a virus by accident which was potentially fatal to Vulcans, Romulans and similar aliens, and this prompted a Romulan attack on the station. Kirk to the rescue of course. ;)

That was the one where you can whip up laughing gas in the gas synthesizer. I loved those games.

Yeah, and you can actually do everything wrong on that particular mission and still get a 100% approval rating from Starfleet. Whereas on the first mission you could lose a few points by not having Spock scan someone with a tricorder. :p

Was it the first game that was literally impossible to finish? It ended with a battle scene which, due to the clunky controls, you had no chance of ever winning.

I got 100% on every mission but the first one. I never scored above 96% in that. If I ever replay it, I'm much more interested in a marginal score than an excellent score. How many civilians, redshirts, and aliens can I kill without being relieved?

Edit: To stay on topic, there's some Carol Marcus backstory in the movie novelizations.

She certainly appears in the Star Trek VI novelisation, her research outpost having been attacked by Klingons. She also turns up in the Generations book, in one of Kirk's Nexus fantasies.

And in the prolouge following up on the Star Trek VI novelisation.

Focus on the two Elasi ships first, once they are toast you can focus on the fake Enterprise. Also, once the Elasi ships are destroyed, go to a complete stop. The fake Enterprise usually goes in a weird circle pattern that rarely deviates. I think the enhanced torpedoes you can get in that Harry Mudd level help out a bit, but during my recent play through I'm wondering if they are really all that helpful. It's not a hard mission really, then again I used to play X-Wing religiously, nothing seems to hard after that game.
