Notes from a Buffy Virgin - Season Two

Also the Angel crossover episode ("Remember Me?" I think it was) wherin he becomes mortal and he and Buffy spend a wonderous afternoon of "normal" love and companionship (and humping like bunnies). Sarah's performance when she finds out it all has to be erased may just be her most heart-wrenching ever.

I've loved all the little analogies to teen love cliches throughout the series - like the ol' "The world won't end if you sleep with your boyfirend" trope. Oh yeah? And one line of Buffy's (maybe in the Xmas episode) where she told Angel that when she thinks of their relationship, "I want to die." And you realize she means it in a very literal way, because then they can be together for eternity. Her perfect delivery of that line gives me a chill every time.

Buffy remains as great now as it did then. Let's hope it holds up in another 10 years.

All the angsty "romantic" vampire shows/movies/books that have come since pale in comparison to the buffy/Angel dynamic.
Let's just hope that possible non-Whedon movie remake proposal made a few months ago goes tits up.
ASH thinks its a crap idea
And Alyson Hannigan does too

It's beyond obvious its just to cash in all this current vampire craze rather than "hey we actually have a good idea", and all the kids nowadays are too obsessed with their Bella & Edward's to even care anyway.
I can't imagine it being anything of goodness. Probably just something to sully the memory of a great franchise (ala the Burton Planet of the Apes remake)

Completely agree with you, Ethros. The new non-Whedon project sucks, and frankly reeks of cashing in on the Twilight phenomenon. Let's hope it stays in development hell.

Forbin, you're right. Buffy and Angel were infinitely better written and performed than that Twilight muck. And with more humour, too. The blend of light heartedness and drama is what really made Whedon's creation feel unique. It's one of the rare things in pop culture that was both phenomenally popular and of high quality. I'm a straight guy, and 'The Body' is one of the few pieces of TV that actually makes me cry every time I see it.

Well, I've been noticing the various Twilight parallels, from what I know of that story. Obviously the main difference is the ass-kicking lead versus the "ordinary" bookish outsider. But Buffy constantly acknowledges the ridiculous age difference, whereas Twilight entirely ignores it.

For what it's worth, I just watched Twilight today. Roswell is probably a better comparison than Buffy. As you pointed out, Bella is more of a bookish lead, not a fighter. The same can be said for Liz Parker. Also, Roswell & Twilight are both primarily romance stories. Buffy has some great romance elements but focuses more on the action elements. Plus, both Edward Cullen & Max Evans have a family that feels threatened by Bella/Liz's new knowledge of their secret after he saves her life. Roswell & Twilight both started out as teen books. Buffy is more like a cross between Hammer horror films & Beverly Hills 90210.

The big difference between Roswell & Twilight: Roswell was made with a large heaping of writing & acting talent. Twilight is... not. (I'd say Roswell's writing is only about 1 level below that of Buffy, while the Roswell acting is probably even better than that of Buffy.)

"I Will Remember You." It's the only episode that ever really sold me on the Buffy/Angel romance.

How did that tender moment go?
Angel: I want to hold your heart and keep it safe.
Buffy: That's Sweet. Or, taken literally, incredibly gross.
