The National Board of Review, arguably the first major Oscar precursor of the awards season released its picks for 2009.

The NBR picks a Best Film of the Year, and then gives awards to 10 other films as Top Films of the Year (so, essentially they name 11 Top Films). The last two winners of the NBR's top award went on to win the Best Picture Oscar.

Cool! So when do they hold the academy awards anyway?

Re: Star Trek in National Board of Review's Top Films of 2009

Very cool. I still highly doubt that Star Trek will be nominated for Best Picture, but this is some nice recognition nonetheless.

Yesss. Right on schedule; moving right along. Thanks Mv.

That's pretty cool for a "sci-fi" film. Just the fact that it's being considered is awesome. The critics loved it, the public loved it and hopefully the different award shows will give them some love as well, even if it's just nominations.

This isn't a nomination. They pick 11 winners - Star Trek is one of them.

Oh, thanks for the correction. That's great.

I'm very surprised the NBR included Star Trek in its Top Eleven- but pleasantly so, of course. And while it's still something of a long shot, this does increase the films chance of becoming one of the Academy's ten Best Picture nominees. Academy voters are all about the perception of a certain film. If those who haven't seen Star Trek before now realize that it may be award-worthy because it's on the NBR list, they might take a look at it and find it adequate to include in their own list of nominations.

Whether that actually happens remains to be seen.

The good thing is that now Paramount can plaster this all over its "For Your Consideration" material.

^^ Indeed. And they surely will. And while I still don't think this will sway voter opinion, it will get many people to see the film who otherwise wouldn't have bothered. If you look at most years' NBR top tens, they are comprised of very acclaimed, very good films. For Star Trek to be in that company is great.

I agree - Trek is stil a VERY long shot, at best, to get an Oscar nod. But anything that promotes Trek as a good film is good for the franchise as a whole.

This year there will be more Best Picture nominees, so there is a better chance of Star Trek getting an Oscar nod.
For advertising, it means they can say, "Winner of ___ awards!" & "___ Academy Award nominations!" Which is never a negative.

With a field of ten nominations, and this endorsement, Star Trek actually has a good chance of being nominated for Best Picture. But I'm prepared to eat my hat (which, at this juncture, would require purchasing a hat just for this purpose) if it ever comes close to winning Best Picture.

A Serious Man better get an Oscar nod. Seriously, I keep turning it over in my head, very few Coen brother films have hit the mark for me as well as this.

But I'm prepared to eat my hat (which, at this juncture, would require purchasing a hat just for this purpose) if it ever comes close to winning Best Picture.
It at least has the momentum of being a critical success which made a tidy mint at the box office. If the Academy felt obliged to throw the award at a crowd pleasing summer picture, this may be one of their better shots.

I mean, what else is there should they go that route? If Harry Potter is ever getting a win, surely it will be for the last picture, a la Return of the King. And giving the Twilight or Transformers sequels the win would be the sort of Faustian bargain I'd feel dirty for on their behalf.

But yeah, I sincerely doubt it. I am surprised that Star Trek beat, say, District 9 for the Top 11 award, though, and not too unpleasantly.

It was in their Top 10 Independent Films of 2009 list.
