If he does well in Spring Training, he could be there on Opening Day. It's not like there is anything to lose.

And the Braves got Billy Wagner, who seems to be a lot more reliable and doesn't have the insane number of blown saves that Soriano and Gonzalez have.

It was a thought, but I think that was a last resort, in case they couldn't find a SS that fits into their price range. Scutaro does.

This signing also indicates another thing to me...that the Jason Bay era is done, and the Red Sox have every intention of Matt Holliday in left field next year. The Sox gave Toronto their first round draft pick because they signed Scutaro, but if they sign another Type A FA, that draft pick drops down to the 3rd round IIRC. The only area I can see them going all out for a Type A, is left field, and the only one that would allow that particular draft pick situation, is Matt Holliday.

I still think they pick up either Mike Gonzalez or Soriano for the bullpen, and I really, really, really think that over the next month or so, they trade for Roy Halladay.

No problem. The Braves don't ever use anybody they draft anyway... except for Chipper Jones. I think they have really bad scouts.

I agree that Bay is probably gone, and with any luck, we'll be seeing Matt Holliday patrolling left field--hopefully for many seasons to come. After the Mark Teixeira fiasco last offseason, I don't see the Sox letting another huge target like Holliday get away.

Halladay is probably the more likely, though my fanboy homer dream is to see the Red Sox trade for Gonzalez this year and then sign Halladay next year when he hits free agency, rather than giving up a ton of draft picks for him now on top of having to pay him huge dollars.

Of course, it's equally as likely that we could end up with neither one of them, too. Hopefully we'll get at least one. And I know hoping to end up with all three is almost impossible, but I can still dream.

Well the thing with Holliday is that I don't think the Yankees are going to involved, a la the Teix fiasco. The way the market is this year, it's a buyers market, and I think that fact that the Yankees have said they are cutting payroll changes that market. Not that I don't think they are gonna have their grubby little fingers in the negotiations, it's their job to, but I don't think they are ready to commit those dollars and years to him after spending so much last year (with good results admitedly). I think for this year, they are gonna commit money to the bullpen, Pettitte, and a left fielder they know, a la, Damon, or Matsui. I see it much more likely they target Halladay with prospects, rather then commit money to Holliday.

Of course they are the Yankees, so they could buy the whole FA class and just do as they please....

No, you're right, I think it's more likely that they'd go after Halladay over Holliday, too. Hopefully they'll end up with neither, but honestly, I really wouldn't be surprised to see Halladay wearing pinstripes in the near future.

I really do not like the idea of the Diamondbacks trading away Max Scherzer like this. I think he's on the verge of awesome

Im sorry, but the D-Backs are fucking MORONS for doing this deal. They give up two potentially awesome arms, for what? Ian Kennedy and half a good year of Edwin Jackson. Thats beyond insane.

Doesn't help the fact the Yanks made out like bandits either. They gave up garbage to get Granderson.

I see the deal from two perspectives:
1 - Tigers want to shed payroll
2 - Yanks need an outfielder and he helps them get younger

What's the Dbacks goal here?

Man, the Tigers dump two of their All-Stars from last year. I understand making cost-cutting moves, and getting younger, but I'm still not sure it's a good move to dump both. Oh well, the Tigers got a lot of young talent in this deal. And if teams like Tampa Bay are any indication, it's possible to be successful with young players.
