once again need to quash the generational BS. I am 43, a fa since '72, and quite enjoyed this movie.

yah I am even more decrepified than you and I love this movie with all my heart. Have the action figures to prove it. Fan since the 70's TOS reruns.

This age stuff is just crap.

I'd even guess that we older fans may have actually liked the movie more than younger fans. It was rejuvinating. We were cheated out of a large portion of these characters' lives (think 79 TOS episodes v. 170+ for other Trek series and their characters), and now they're back in all their young glory.
Here I am, 49, and I was buying cereal for what's in the box again, bought a toy phaser, bought a new uniform costume, bought a Trek novelization for the first time since 1980, and I've just been enjoying the heck out of Star Trek again. It's been fun. And, it's even more fun to have something to look forward to -- STXII.

Oh yeah, REJUVENATING!! It's HUGE fun to throw yourself into the frenzy.. I've been plodding along in all the other series for decades now but this really a jolt of fandom fabulousness.

When I came out of the theater after seeing Nemesis I was like.. meh, that was okay, I guess I'll see it again when the dvd comes out. By the next day I couldn't remember most of it.

When I came out of the theater after seeing STXI I was like.. WANT TO BUY ACTION FIGURES.. WANT T-SHIRTS.. WANT SOUNDTRACK.. WANT TO SEE AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN.. and MUST READ FORUM NOW!!!!!! (And I went back and saw it another 4 times in the theater)

I'm rejuvenated all right.

Why should you need your parents' acknowledgment in order to appreciate (or not) a movie? Why is this relevant to you.

EDIT TO ADD: This is NOT a flame, I'm just a bit puzzled by that initiative.

I don't need their absolute, total approval in order for me to enjoy the film. But they are my parents, they have raised me, they have guided me through life, so I do feel I have to at least take notice of their opinions.

This is exactly how it makes me feel. STXI made me feel "Young, i feel young" much more than TWOK did... and i love that movie. And yeah, when was the last time i bought a cereal for what was inside the box (or on the box)...

I think they call this a generation gap...

No, seriously, I agree with some (actually, most) of the points, but again, this movie wasn't made to cater to an older audience or even the original fanbase. This movie was made to make Trek exciting and relevant enough for the younger set to like it.

I actually feared it would be a lot worse than it was.

And arguably, Pine's Kirk is more realistic than Shatner's...XI made no bones about the fact that nuKirk is what most people would deem an a-hole who needs to get his act together. Saving the day got him brownie points, yes, but I don't think it fundamentally altered anyone's perception of his character and flaws. Now they just know he's capable of doing better and hopefully will push for it all the harder. TOS Kirk tended to get an 'oh, you' head shake because gee, he's the cutie and the hero and those types can do no real wrong.

As for the sex and loudness...well, again, generation gap. I could do without random shots of braless girls, but I actually like that Trek is louder and more in your face. Slow pace and 'quiet' was what bored general audiences to death before. Time for a shake-up.

My biggest bone of contention is the darned lens flares.

I don't know about the generation gap. I am 46 and have been a fan since I was 10 and I simply loved the movie as did my 22 year old daughter.

LOL, 46 ain't old! 46 means you're just a tad bit older than Trek itself!

Oh, you are both SO right! I've watched TOS since the original, and I've gone so nuts for this movie that I think my husband, family, and friends believe I'm starting to get senile. But I'm having a blast.

IN MY OPINION ONLY (I emphasize this because I'm not interested in getting into a discussion of the merits of contemporary sci-fi), much of sci-fi has lost its optimism and heart these days. Also, I live in a state (Michigan) that's depressing, to say the least, and this new ST throws me back to a happier time, when the original Star Trek made me excited about the future and all the possibilities in the world. So I have the Burger King figures, and the action figures, and the Target Enterprise DVD holder, and the calendar, and the book, and the PC desktop ST XI photos, and I've seen the movie uncounted times, and it's fun--and I feel like a kid again. And the best part is, I'm not the only 50+ year-old fan that feels that way. It's like therapy!

I re-watched the movie at the cinema at a senior screeing so 50+ for large parts of the audience (2 films they could choose) and there was a good showing of numbers there choose STAR TREK over the other movie, which was Marley & Me. The general reception to the movie I thought was a good one even older people over 60 seem to like it.

at the end of the day it was little more than a movie about a bunch of kids saving the day by blowing stuff up. They missed the depth and emotion of early Trek films

Indeed, it seemed to me that the filmmakers assumed the characters would be liked and have audience support because of their previous portrayals. I missed the sense of professionalism (the crew was respectful but ultimately obeyed the captain, there wasn't a big desire for promotions, which took a long time to get) of the previous Treks with this film presenting Kirk as an arrogant-but-right hero who deserves to be listened to and have command largely because of who his father was and because he proved himself in the other timeline.

...does not exist, as far as Star Trek is concerned. Viewer age just hasn't been shown to be a significant factor governing whether the majority of people decided to like or dislike the movie.

Just here to chime in about my parents' opinion of the movie. They are both 46 (I'm 24), and they both were TOS fans. My dad has always been really into Star Trek, and his favorite is Kirk. I asked him to explain why, and he said little more than "Kirk is the man." Whatever you say, Daddy!

My mom was much more casual in her viewing of the series. She remembers watching it with her brother after school, but she watched it enough to know the characters' names and roles and various conventions of the series. As soon as Scotty showed up, she was desperate to hear him say, "I'm givin' it all she's got, Captain!" She was most pleased when he finally delivered.

That said, both of them loved the film. I worried that my dad might have problems with Kirk, but if he did, he didn't tell me about it. They both especially loved Bones. They kept saying, "That guy is a great Bones" and laughed at everything he said.

More than saying it was a good Star Trek movie, they both said that it was simply a good movie in general. They were entertained and amused throughout, and they seemed pleased at the portrayal of all the characters. They're both eager to see future sequels, and Mom is buying Dad a copy of the DVD for Christmas. I'm sure he'll be eager to rewatch his favorite scenes again!
