Opinion desired on 1701 refit models/toys

I just got the Hot Wheels refit, and it's nice (or will be, when I hair-dryer the plastic saucer section to a better angle in line with the nacelles & acrylic paint it up a little), but I was wondering what's the best refit modle/toy out there in the opinion of them that own it?:techman:

Check out both the AMT Refit (1/2500 which is shortly getting a re-release as the TOS, TMP and B Collection) or pre-made the F-Toys version. (Actually all the F-Toys 1/2500 toys are beautiful IMHO!)

For models, the Bandai prepaint/electrified kit is pretty damn accurate, a decent size, but awfully expensive (and out of production).

The giant 1/350 Polar Lights refit model is the best, most accurate plastic kit of it ever made to date. It's not very expensive considering its size (about the same price as the Bandai!). But at 34" long and a couple hundred parts, it's not for the casual modeler.

The good ol' AMT/Ertl kit which has served us since 1979 has a plethora (I love that word) of accuracy issues, plus that hideous and inaccurate bolier-plate paneling texture. But there are a billion resin accurizing sets and decals out there to fix it.

Alliance Models has an awesome 1/1000 resin kit available at Federation models (dot com). It's the best resin kit in that scale of the ship, and has a detailed 1701-A shuttle bay.

Starcraft makes a 1/1400 kit, also available at Federation. Their resin seems a bit soft lately, though. I used a sacuer for a kitbash recently and it's sagging like a watch in a Dali painting.

And of course Polar Lights will be issuing a brand-new 1/1000 plastic kit in a month or two. The previews look awesome.

That's an awesome-looking model.
Until it's available, this is my Hot Wheels Refit after hair-dryer re-alignment & touch-up painting:

Painting something this small does present its challenges:lol:

i rather like the hot wheels models. mostly because i lack any construction skillz whatsoever.

But they do take some artistry to make perfect- if you want it cool out of the box, I recommend the Diamond toys, and THEY light up even!:techman:
But...$50 a pop with shipping....

What bits are going to be painted?
Also, the Art Asylum 1701-A from late 2003 is very nice. I went to a Meijer's on December 23, 2003, and there had to be like 50 of them there...and for just $20.00. I grabbed one, which was good, because when I went back there a week later, all of them were gone. They also had the TOS phasers there, and a bunch of 12-15 year old chicks were having a blast with them in the toy isle. I also heard the original 2003 batch are better than the Wrath of Khan/Search for Spock versions now, cause the plastic quality's different....mine's VERY sturdy. :bolian:

Mine is back in one piece, although the nacelles come off it every time it keels over, but the stand is gone so nothing to display it on. It sits beside my PC on its back, and every now and again I pick it up and make whooshing noises as i move it back and forth.

I never considered it worth doing up, the fit of the various parts isn't great and it's already painted with light blue highlights and the aztec pattern moulded in. The registry decal on the top of the saucer is pretty bad, one half of it is rather smeared and out of focus.

Sorry for your display loss.

Admittedly a 1701-D, but I have 3 of these Galoob Enterprises. The funniest part was, it was almost to scale with the FASA and Star Fleet Battles lead miniatures (going by the established sizes for the ships). It was actually about 1/2" too short for the exact scale they were using.

One of the best toys of the refit, is the Johnny Lightning 1701. It's sitting in front of me right now, and while its small, its actually pretty nicely detailed. I'll second the AA Enterprise (I have TWOK version). The hot wheels enterprise I had and sent back. I'm sure it would look nice with a little care, but overall I found it a disappointment.
