What to do with a dead laptop?

Hey, guys! I was wondering what I should do with my recently deceased laptop. Any suggestions?

If it is truly dead, part it out. People always need spare parts, and you can make some decent money from doing so.

J.

No idea where you live but in my city here in Aust we have specific days throughout the year where we can drop off e-waste, such as laptops, at collection centres and they will recycle them so they don't contribute to landfill.

I finally threw one dead laptop I had away. Just took it to the trash and threw it out.

If a computer is operational, however, I like to donate them, if I can. There actually ARE people out there who only want a computer for email, after all.

Right now, I'm trying to figure out what to do with a dead TV. When you purchase a new one, will someplace like Best Buy pick up the old one?

I don't know...

i reckon you should build it a funeral pyre like luke did for vader in ROTJ and see if it's spirit joins the electrical appliances that died before it.

Oh, good thread topic. I have at least three dead laptops sitting in my old room. And two mostly-dead.

Contact some local computer stores. Most will allow you to drop off your dead computer hardware for recycling for no charge.

A gallon of gasoline and a match solves all your problems...

(as long as the local fire department doesn't catch you)

I thought you weren't supposed to throw computers away.

And how old is your dead TV? I definitely know you're not supposed to throw older ones away. They have toxic parts!

Actually, my 20 year old TV works just fine. It's the two newer HD TVs that are going bad. One is almost 5 years old and one is barely over 2 years old. Both, I have been told, are more expensive to fix than to purchase a new one.

I am so disgusted with both of these TVs it's unreal. TVs that you spend thousands of dollars on should last more than 5 years....and TVs that you send hundreds on should last more than 2 years.

And I didn't know you were not supposed to throw out computers....

What are you supposed to do with them if they are completely non-functional or so old that no one would want them, no matter how desperate?

I agree. It'll probably be only one part which has broken. Computers are built from modular electronics -- a collection of separate replaceable parts. Somebody can make use of the working parts.

Sell / give it to someone who can repair / strip it. But don't just dispose of it. :)

Lots of cities have a recycling program in place; they may charge a fee though. Here people put it out to the curb and they usually disappear before the trash picks it up.

Fix it. I had a dead thinkpad recently that I was able to resurrect by baking the motherboard in the oven briefly, resoldering the video chip to the main board.

Not sure how easy it is for you to get to, but Datadoctors stores will recycle any kind of old electronics. That link is to a location in Atlanta. They probably will know of someone who will come and pick up the TVs if they're not portable.
