BMW Z4 Spanked by a VW GTI

Yeah but there's something about a BMW. To me, it doesn't really matter how fast i get there, it's how i get there. I'd rather get there in luxury. Plus i have a soft spot for BMW.

Ummm ..., love ya like my luggage, Shameless, but I have to ask: have you noticed how often your friend's BMW is in the shop? I ask because, everyone I've ever known who's owned one ends up in the dealership's "courtesy car" at least as often as they're in their own, and -- not kidding -- spending an average of $1000/month on repairs. I love the look of BMWs but, in all seriousness, in the 20 years I've lived in Boston, every single person i know who's owned one has had it in the shop constantly and has spent so much money on repairs that it has turned me off completely.

I haven't had any major problems with mine and I've had it for a couple of years now. The only time I had to take it in for any significant repairs was after I got into a fender bender in downtown Chicago.

Yeah my parents owned a Bimmer for several years and 100,000 miles and it never had any mechanical issues beyond routine maintenance. I don't know what real numbers are out there for BMW's reliability as a car brand.

There have been some major, well documented complaints about the quality of VW in the last decade, though. And I say that as a VW owner who has escaped relatively unscathed lol.

My friend's Z3 is 12 years old and no it's not in the shop all that often. I will say this though, when it's in the shop, it's really in the shop. In the 3 years that i've known her, the car's been in the shop about 3-4 times.

That vid is why you should not street race. Especially in an old station wagon.

One thing the city I live in has done to prevent illegal street races is to arrange legal drag races for everyone in a industrial area. Every Sunday from early this summer to the end of October you could come and race. And while it hasn't ended all street races around here, it's certainly cut down on them. And made it easier for the police to crack down on the true idiots.

See i'd love that! I drive a Nissan Sentra; it's not gonna win any speed races but i drive really fast and it's amazing what that little car can do sometimes, and i would like to be able to know what it can really do.

That's the beauty of it: everyone can enter! I could enter with my Saab if I wanted. But I don't have any good tires for it so I'd have a hard time getting grip... Bro is probably going to race once he's got a more powerful bike.

My friend used to do those, not really drag races but they're held in local large parking lots that are empty on Saturdays (like a stadium on non-game days) where they set up a course. Nifty thing.

That was the VWs built in Mexico. Volkswagen has since corrected that issue.

That's good to know because I'm going to be in the market for another car in fairly short order, and I've had a very good experience with my (Mexican built!) VW but was leery of buying another because of those quality issues. What model year did they finally iron out the electrical and mechanical issues?

Sometime during/after 2005. VW got fed up with the complaints and the US/Canadian dealers turning away deliveries of vehicles built at the Mexico plant and shut it down for 30-days. Everyone in the plant had to requalify for his job. After that, the number of problems dropped substantially.

I just happen to be in the market for a (used) Jetta Sportwagon with the 1.9l TDI. Also note that recently, VW surpassed Toyota as the world's largest automaker.

I'm seriously happy to hear you all know of such good experiences with BMWs. I've loved them from afar for a long time, and was seriously considering going that direction the next time I need to get a car -- which is coming sooner rather than later. But, all my friends' and acquaintances' negative experineces the past few years has really made me gun-shy. And yeah, it seems everything one of them goes in the shopt it's a fortune to have it fixed. The woman in the office next to mine absolutely loves her 328, but jokes that it's at least $1000 ever time it has to go in the shop ... which is often; at least once every other month.

But they are so nice and shiny .... ;)

Yeah but a BMW would be much more comfortable. :p And you have the bragging rights that comes with Bimmers.

Ya, just think. You get to brag about the fact that your Z4 has to have a "basstube" for the engine to make it sound deeper.

*snicker*

That just made me laugh.

And, a little off topic, but that reminded me, does anyone know whether it's true that the Lexus "IS" has fake and totally "cosmetic" dual exhaust pipes coming out the back?

You mean on the IS F? It's a true dual exhaust but with quad tips that are not connected to the baffles. They are separated only by an inch or two and exhaust does still pass through them.

People tease IS F owners because of this. Lexus claims it has aerodynamic benefits. I can tell you first hand that the greatest benefit to an owner is lack of exhaust soot on the chrome.
The ISx50 line have a true dual exhaust.

My brother drives an IS250, I have an F.

Ah, thanks for clarifying. I just remember hearing something along those lines somewhere along the lines of my passive car shopping. I like the IS F a lot ... only it won't fit me, The Hubby, our 2 labs and all the crap we have to take when we travel with them. Sometimes it sucks being a "parent". :p

I'm looking at a station wagon .... :scream:

Actually, as wagons go, it's a pretty snazzy one, though.

Anyway, back to the Bimmer thrashing. :p

I've road-tripped in a gasoline VW Jetta Wagon owned by a friend of mine. I drive like I stole it while he drives like the Feds are after him. I was thoroughly impressed with the comfort, handling, and cargo capacity.

I'm currently looking for a diesel Jetta Wagon. You might considering one as well, but either way you go, I think you'll appreciate the Jetta.

Well I'll be damned. A slightly used Jetta Sportwagen TDI is the car I was looking at as a replacement for my currently 11 year old Jetta sedan. I can't afford new, but until I knew what model year VW cleaned up their act, I was nervous about going for a used one. Thanks for the info.

We'll have to compare notes.

Actually, let's take a break from the Beemer bashing. If you want a station wagon, I think I have something in mind:

2005SubaruLegacyGT.jpg

Yes, it's a turbo, with 206kW on tap. The only other fast wagons I can think of off the top of my head are the M3 and the RS4 and 6 Avants, which are at least three times the price of this baby

Point of order, "Beemer" refers to motorcycles made by BMW. "Bimmer" refers to cars made by BMW. ;)

And now, back to our regularly scheduled thread.
