My parents opinions on ST IX

Well, it's total BS around here. There was a poll done of us old timers during the first week of the movie release, and it wasn't even close. It was like 78% of the old timers here liked it or loved it.

So, it's still not total BS.
It could apply to some of the 22% who didn't love it or like it ;):p

The sex thing can come down to the standards of TV in the 60s being what they are. One of Kirk's few implied sex acts got past the censors because it was a procreative act.

However, Kirk is quite the ladies man, he had a number of romantic encounters throughout the series' run, more than a few of whom he may or may not have had sex with. ("I love Edith Keeler" - but did he make love to Edith Keeler? Inquiring minds...)

The standards of today and film are somewhat more lax than the standards of 60s TV, and are actually a tad more expecting the hero to be more forward in his sexuality, and so rather understandably the movie obliges us. It's true it's tapping into Kirk's reputation as a ladies man more than his actual portrayal on the series -actually having him get it on with a green women is an obvious nod to a generation of jokes about green skinned alien babes, even if he only ever met one such woman and she was mentally damaged.

I actually really enjoyed Kirk's characterisation in the film, although I felt there wasn't much of an arc to it - he rises to the occasion, but he doesn't seem to slip into being a responsible man. Well, there's always the sequel for that, and don't get me wrong, really liked Kirk in this film.

Islander beat me to the Insurrection gag. Oh, well....

I'm one of the old fogies - watched TOS from day 1 in first run starting in 1966. I did like the movie and thought that it did a lot of things very well. There are, of course, plot holes and things that didn't quite sit right with me, but overall, I think JJ got what he was shooting at: a Trek movie that would bring in new fans (with increased action, good effects, rock music, bratty kids, etc.) while harking back to Trek's legacy and giving the old timers enough oppotunities to latch on if they wanted to.

I really wish they had changed the ending to a "2 Years Later" epilogue rather than giving Kirk immediate command. But, I'll live with it.

I hope that ST XII will have the crew established and a bit more mature.

Well, they were all kids. Pike bumped up Kirk and Uhura himself. Sulu replaced a guy who had the bad luck to get lung worm. If they're letting all the fleet except for seven or eight ships and a boat load of cadets fly off to the Laurentian, then they have to expect them to be a little attitudinal around the gills.

I watched it last not with the 'rents too on BD. They both seemed to enjoy it, my dad enjoyed how all the cast members played their iconic roles. My mom was impressed with the BD (via component) picture.

I'm sorry, but I just didn't like young Kirk in this film. Far too narcissistic and macho. Hopefully he'll grow more mature in future films. Spock and McCoy were much better portrayed. The inclusion of rock/pop tracks may work in other genres, but in Trek it just felt forced.

once again need to quash the generational BS. I am 43, a fa since '72, and quite enjoyed this movie.

19 here, worst movie I've seen since Transformers.

23 here, far better film than Transformers and even a few Treks. :techman:

Game, set, match.

Thank you folks.

Excellent read.

yah I am even more decrepified than you and I love this movie with all my heart. Have the action figures to prove it. Fan since the 70's TOS reruns.

I LOVE STXI <3

Just ordered the calendar.. can.not.wait.

This age stuff is just crap.

I'd even guess that we older fans may have actually liked the movie more than younger fans. It was rejuvinating. We were cheated out of a large portion of these characters' lives (think 79 TOS episodes v. 170+ for other Trek series and their characters), and now they're back in all their young glory.
Here I am, 49, and I was buying cereal for what's in the box again, bought a toy phaser, bought a new uniform costume, bought a Trek novelization for the first time since 1980, and I've just been enjoying the heck out of Star Trek again. It's been fun. And, it's even more fun to have something to look forward to -- STXII.

NuKirk isn't exactly my favourite character in the film either. When he called Pike "man" in the diner....ugh.

Unfortunately it seems like a lot of people don't understand the growth the character of Kirk underwent and will continue to go through. Seems perfectly understandable that Kirk finally gained some responsibility and became a lot closer to what we are familiar with Kirk being...but that also part of the problem...people are judging by the final product of Kirk that we got from previous Trek. This is a NEW Trek and unlike Kirk from that series there will be a lot more character changes. I for one think its a good thing.

Why should you need your parents' acknowledgment in order to appreciate (or not) a movie? Why is this relevant to you.

EDIT TO ADD: This is NOT a flame, I'm just a bit puzzled by that initiative.

It's that and Jim Kirk in the bar calling Pike, "Man," was about 10 years younger than Captain Kirk when we first met him in "The Mantrap".
It's just not fair to compare Kirk to Kirk. :wtf: I guess I mean comparing Kirk at the stage of his life we see him at in the movie to the TOS Kirk, who is a full-blown mature starship captain from the day we meet him. And, we know ST09 Kirk will get there, too.

Chris Pine's Kirk is just young, why did it bother you his portrayal as a younger Kirk from the one you knew in TOS.

I think there's an expectation of Kirk to be this saintly figure from birth, when it was even established in TWOK that he cheated on the Kobayashi Maru and that there have been a number of times where he'd disobey direct orders from Starfleet (I remember the little laugh the audience gave in TUC, when he said on trial, "On occasion...I have disobeyed orders.")

Even Harve Bennett, who people love within Trek history, had Kirk as a bit of a loose cannon in the treatments for "Starfleet Academy".

He's still a young man when we see him in XI, even at the end. He's still "Jim Kirk", not "James T. Kirk".

There's a lot of growing and maturing to do, and we'll now be there to see it happen.
