The ONLY thing I hated about STXI (please explain)

^ You must have hated that The Dark Knight marketing was targeting children with toys and other tie-ins even though the movie was clearly not for them.

Seriously though, you must be really sensitive to that sort of thing because Trek XI was very tame for a PG-13 movie.

Trek XI was tame for primetime television. I'm baffled by all the complaints in this thread...

I didn't care for my 13 year old to hear that.
I can understand your point, but that's what happens. Not everyone agree on what is PG, PG-13, R, etc. There will be obviously different interpretations. You objected to the language, others may have objected to the sexy scenes, others found it perfectly appropriate. I just think you are on the tail of the distribution about this, but outliners are always to be expected.

That's just a completely unnecessary line for a Trek film.
This, however, is nonsense. There are no "rules of Star Trek" a movie shall obey to be allowed to bear the title. Unnecessary for what? Arguably, writers and directors found it necessary, either way it would not have made the final cut.

Trek is the future. The future is perfect. Therefore, no bestiality jokes in the future. Gene R. told me that. That is all.

Or people don't care anymore in the future and bestiality is common in Iowa in the future. See, it makes sense now. Uhura wasn't insulting Kirk. She was generally mixed up as bestiality is generally practiced. Gene R. told me that. That is all.

I didn't care for my 13 year old to hear that.

:wtf:

I'm sure your 13-year-old has heard worse.

The 13-year-old has probably said worse.

Seriously.

You'd think that Uhura's saying that was complimented with a visual image of Kirk porking a cow.

There's not a single thing in this movie that was inapropriate for a 13-year-old, or was something that's not on network TV every damn night.

I mean, Uhura suggesting that Kirk fucks cows is the worst thing a thirteen-year-old child can hear? Really?

Is that racist? Just wondering has a black guy. I know a hick is a poor rural white but for a black person to say that would it be considered racist?

Star Trek was rated PG-13. That means parents who decide to take children under 13 to see it should expect to give Parental Guidance concerning questionable material or not take them at all.

Exactly.

I didn't care for my 13 year old to hear that. That's just a completely unnecessary line for a Trek film. If this was truly a film aimed at adults, why would they be marketing to kids even younger than 13? Look at all of the action figures and toys. Many of them are aimed directly at 8-12 year old boys. I'm not talking about the collectables that adults buy.

I remember years ago when Saturday Night Fever came out and was a huge hit, it was rereleased toned down so that teens could go see it and enjoy the film. I know, I know: I'm dating myself here, but I would really like to see that become a regular thing for Trek films: release at the same time to theatres a PG and a PG-13 or even R version. Then, when it is released on disc, both versions would be included. The director would film dual scenes when necessary and he woul approve the edited version so that his vision is left intact. I think that's what was done for some scenes of the Sopranos so that it could be sold into sindication. The PG version would also be the version that would be aired on broadcast TV and perhaps on cable/sat for some showings.

You are entitled to wish to shield your children from what you consider inappropriate language (or anything else). However, the target of movie ratings should be what the majority of the general population is willing to tolerate for any given age point--not the outliers at either end. NOTHING in Trek XI is remotely "over the line" for a PG-13 movie as far as that majority is concerned. And if this particular PG-13 movie was sufficiently coarse to offend you, then it is your responsibility (now that you know what the mild end of the PG-13 spectrum is like--the LOTR movies and The Dark Knight are far more violent and should be far more offensive to you) as a parent seeking to shelter your children from potential offence to prescreen other films you think might be objectionable. I did that with the five Harry Potter films currently available for home viewing. I scored a bargain for all five, thinking my kids would like to see them someday, and when my then six year old daughter asked me if she could watch them, I watched them alone first (not having seen them before purchase). I decided, knowing her as I do, that they were a bit too intense for her and she should wait until age 9 or 10. OR you could also do what I do with my children when they are inadvertently exposed to something I consider inappropriate. Use the moment in question as something to discuss--tell them you find it inappropriate and get them to reason out why that is. Works wonders with my kids and it teaches them to think rather than simply fear or disdain as a reflex.

Some people seem to forget that US ratings aren't the norm for the rest of the world (as is the case with everything else). PG-13? In other countries, it was 12, or whatever.

I just don't think that it was offensive or too brutal in any way. If I had kids, I would have taken them to see it. So what. No big deal. They wouldn't get mentally damaged just because someone made a stupid comment about sex with farm animals, or because of a bar fight.

I took both my fifteen and eleven year old to Star Trek. The farm animal line was no worse than the 'celibacy' line from The Motion Picture.

Gene was swinger. I'm sure nothing was out of bounds ;)
Whenever I see all that nice mid-century modern decor in TOS, I can't avoid thinking that Gene was really furnishing his bachelor pad, a la Hugh Hefner's Playboy Mansion in Chicago.

I thought that line was funny and well-delivered. I don't think it insulted anyone or anyone's intelligence. The insult was not directed at dumb hicks, but just at someone who is both a dumb hick and has sex with farm animals. There need not be any correlation between membership in the two groups.

The line definitely got laughs each of the times I saw the film.

No, it was an insult. It was an insinuation that people from the country have sex with animals. There was also an insinuation in that scene that people from the country are stupid, which is part of why Kirk was supposed to be special. Neither insinuation was all that unusual, which is why I'm not hugely insulted by them, but I couldn't help but think, "typical..."

I found the line, not so much upsetting and I understand where some are coming from especially if they have children, I found that the line was not in character with the Star Trek tradition and it appeared out of place with what I thought was a very good film.
