The ONLY thing I hated about STXI (please explain)

Pffffttt....I heard people, girls in particular, when I was in school, say stuff like this, and they were no more than 13 or 14. And this was like 15 years ago.

Young people DO talk like all of us. I find it so amazing when older people get 'shocked' or upset upon learning this revelation.

There was also an insinuation in that scene that people from the country are stupid, which is part of why Kirk was supposed to be special.
You've mentioned this before, but I think there's quite a difference between
Your aptitude tests are off the charts, so what is it?
You like being the only genius level repeat-offender in the mid-west?
and insinuating that [all] people from the country are stupid. He's asking Kirk why someone with his potential (not to mention family background) is wasting time getting into trouble, and I don't see any reason for reading more into it than that.

Ditto the farm-animals line; yes, it's an insult... technically, but it's delivered completely without malice. It's more a way for Uhura to admit that she's impressed while at the same time sticking in an amiable gibe which plays on a stereotype neither of them takes seriously, and Kirk replies in the same spirit. It's a little bit of verbal fencing, and nothing more than that.

There is only ONE thing I hated about this movie. And I hated it with a passion and would erase it from my dvd if I could.

Uhura: "I thought you were a dumb hick who only had sex with farm animals."

In the true and proper STAR TREK, the line would have been, "I was under the impression that you were an uneducated rural denizen who procreates exclusively with livestock." To which Kirk would have replied, "Well, not exclusively."

The writers clearly aren't Trekkies.

You need to throw the phrase "reversing polarity" (or variation of) in there and you got a real Star Trek line.

you're forgetting her initial refusal to say what her area of study was, that she clearly doubted he would know what it was when she did say it, and her surprise that he did know when it really wasn't all that hard of a term.

I found the line, not so much upsetting and I understand where some are coming from especially if they have children, I found that the line was not in character with the Star Trek tradition and it appeared out of place with what I thought was a very good film.

That makes sense. It did feel out of place, but not for the reasons other people mentioned.

But then again, Uhura was deliberately insulting him so he'd leave her the hell alone.

I took the line as a "Get the fuck outa my face, you jerk-wad" kinda line.

The line didnt offend me, piss me off or insult my love for Star Trek or the characters. I was enjoying watching a new take on my Trek, yeah i had my gripes like the next person, ive been a TOS fan since watching re-runs when i was like 5 or something, im now 25.

But i was enjoying it. Yeah, the Enterprise sucked at first, but then, hey, they gave us the alternate timeline excuse, and that was enough for me to start enjoying the fun and fast paced movie it turned out to be. I dont care really that it wasnt "The Beginning" that we all wanted at ealst Trek was given a chance and was a huge success. yeah im a die-hard TOS fan, but that didnt hinder my enjoyment of the fact that Star Trek had been JJ'd...

Ok, ok, yeah, i was enjoying it and nit-picking, ok there, i said it, you all happy.

You ever try to strike up a conversation with a woman who isn't interested?

All the time.

I thought the line was uncharacteristically crude for a character I've always thought of as possessing grace and charm. I'd expect the Uhura of old to dismiss an unwanted suitor with a devastating insult wrapped in words of satin and delivered with a smile. The sort of put-down that first sounds like a compliment and a beat later delivers the unequivocal 'No.'

No, it was an insult. It was an insinuation that people from the country have sex with animals. There was also an insinuation in that scene that people from the country are stupid, which is part of why Kirk was supposed to be special. Neither insinuation was all that unusual, which is why I'm not hugely insulted by them, but I couldn't help but think, "typical..."

Typical? Typical of what?

I think she was having a good time dealing with Kirk. Too bad "cupcake" had to ruin her fun. And she did say she was impressed.

I've always thought jokes about having sex with farm animals said a lot about the naive latent sexual fantasies of the city-slicker making the joke, and not much about the hick at whom it's aimed.

From a practical point of view, anyone who has been on a hog farm, or especially any farm boy who works on one, will attest to the fact that it's not exactly an environment ripe for romance. Even for horny farm boys.

On the other hand, if the reality of a mud-caked sow with flies buzzing around her as she lounges in a pen that smells like shit-squared does put a guy in the mood, well, he deserves to be made fun of.
A farm boy knows he is much better off with that fresh-baked cherry pie in the kitchen. ;)
