Constellation class

Was rewatching "Peak Performance," and I've always liked this design. It's cool to see a quad nacelle ship. :)

...And one made of recycled movie-era Constitution class ship parts - yet not looking like a kitbash. At least not too much.

There is a definite sense of "family looks", and a sense of the engineers taking what they had in 2270 and applying it in double the strength to create the best ship possible with those parts. Never mind that a closer look would reveal Transformers (or Macross or whatever components) hidden in there. The ship looks and feels "real" to me.

I always liked it, and I was sorry that we didn't see more. As I recall, we only saw 3: THe Staargazer, the Hathaway, and the Victory. Did I forget any?

An unnamed one was seen at the end of "Redemption I" (via reused Hathaway footage), but in theory she could have been one of the above. However, the model was at some point labeled USS Valkyrie and toured as such, so we could also argue the unnamed "Redemption" ship was the Valkyrie.

We could also consider the Constellation herself; a starship of that name was mentioned in DS9 a couple of times, first in "The Abandoned". There's no proof she would have been the class ship of the geriatric four-naceller class, but it's a possibility. It would be a bit confusing to name, say, the latest Galaxy class vessel "USS Constellation" when there remained ships of the Constellation class still in operation...

Of course, the reverse could also be argued: all the other witnessed ships of the type were basically museum specimen or half-derelicts, with only the Victory ever performing anything resembling a "regular" exploration or defense mission. So it wouldn't make much sense to press the old Constellation, NCC-1974, to frontline service.

I liked the bridge design as well. Wish we'd get some good models/miniatures available....not just super tiny ones, or the type you need to cut from the sheets and reinforce them. :p

Contellations look very roomy, also. :D

We saw two bridge designs, both of which made good sense. The Stargazer had what was no doubt the "original" 2280s style, very similar to the movie NCC-1701 or -A bridges. The Hathaway had what looked like a plausible upgrade, with NCC-1701-C style consoles dumped in the space as if an afterthought, and with the graphics upgraded to the same blue-green style.

The Hathaway bridge really makes it easier to swallow the Enterprise-C one; there is a definite feel of "family" there, even if the exterior still shows "family ties" to an earlier era. I'd have liked to see some of the TNG Mirandas sport such a style as well. Instead, we got the Lantree with very E-D-style graphics, the Brattain with a unique spartan style of orangish MSDs, and the Bozeman with blue-greens even though her retirement preceded the E-C introduction by something like half a century...

Well, I'm sure some Constellations had newer type bridges, as they can be popped off and new ones popped in. Especially the ones still in active use.

And with 4 warp engines, those babies outta have some nice power outputs. Riker was worried when the brainwashed Picard was having flashbacks of Maxia. I'm sure even the damaged Stargazer could have given the Enterprise a nasty bit of damage, if not more.

We never really learned if this was true onscreen, though.

Wouldn't four engines consume rather than produce power?

Riker seemed worried about Picard's safety, though, not of his own.

I'd say so, but it would be quite nice redundancy to have 4 rather than 2 nacelles. Maybe 2 of the nacelles can have the same output as 2 on a normal 2-nacelled vessel, but having an extra pair allows you to put less strain on each individual engine allowing for better long-term performance?
