the TWILITE thing

So, my daughter, who has suffered through several episodes of Hawaii Five-0, and Star Trek movies recently, cashed in her chips and made me watch...ugghhh..Twilite. I have never seen this movie, I have heard of it though. She has this dude's posters all over her room...

I watch it and...its a fricking soap opera. Its the typcial soap opera plot; rough neck (Luke Spenser/ Sonny Corinthos) comes to town. He falls in love with someone special, a good person, but doesn't want to draw them into his 'seedy' life style. (Mob--Vampire, they all dress in black; same thing)...

This appeals to girls, for whatever reason; always has always will. I felt that the story was okay, far too predictable, and just a re-hash of the rough-neck story. I told her I liked it, the way she did when she told me she liked THE MOTION PICTURE (meaning, we lied) and I told her I would take her to the new TWILITE movie when it comes out...

Is this new TWILITE going to be new and inspired??? or is it pretty much going to be the same 'dark somber' character saves the day..again...

I am much more disturbed by the mania surrounding the High School Musical movies. I agree with Eric Cartman on that one - if that's what's cool now, I no longer understand this world.

That being said, I think the recurring appeal of the vampire thing for teenage girls is that the vampire teen guy is simultaneously dangerous AND non-threatening: they have a Dark Secret, and might even kill you [so they're dangerous and misunderstood], but they absolutely, positively can't have sex [so they're less threatening than real teenage boys].

I prefer zombies myself.

My dear, sweet and loving wife resisted the Twilight Temptation for a long time...and finally succumbed when the movie DVD came out...she's not nearly as rabid a fan as your average Twilight fan, but she's cashing in the many times I've dragged her to genre films of my choosing to go see New Moon.

I wonder how much alcohol I can sneak into the theater in a winter coat???

I'm a 40 year old guy and I just thought it was a pretty good movie. Attractive cast, moody atmospheric cinematography, some good action, a twist on the vampire motif that didn't go overboard. I am not going to start basing my life around it, but I've seen hundreds of worse movies.

There's this perception that Twilight is strictly a 'teenage girl' phenomenon, but that's not entirely accurate, as it also appeals to older women, and even some men. It certainly isn't for every person, however.

The ardor of the fandom, though, isn't, IMO, any greater than the ardor of, say, Buffy fans, Harry Potter fans, or Star Trek fans.

That's a good catch on how the rough neck storyline is the same. But... lots of stuff is just soap opera (i.e. melodrama). Guys love the movie Heat, which is total soap opera melodrama - the roughneck story in reverse. Bad guy falls for good girl, bad guy's life is tragic because it will keep him separated from good girl. It's just idealized for men instead of for women - the tragic loan wolf wish fulfillment for all those guys trudging through everyday life with tons of commitments to wife and kids.

Meanwhile, kudos to you for sharing this with your daughter.

I rented the DVD via Netflix when it came out, because it piqued my curiosity. Everyone was talking about it. It seemed to do well at the box office. The trailers for the film seemed like there was potential. I'd also really enjoyed other vampire-centric franchises (particularly Buffy and Angel).

I feel very comfortable saying that Twilight is an awful movie. The acting was bad. The writing was bad. IIRC, the pacing was very irratic, as well. Either poor direction, poor editing, or both. Visually, it was what one would probably expect from a vamire film. Very dark and moody and with lots of grays and blues. Some nifty montages and visuals on occasion, but nothing terribly impressive. The two main characters were quiet irritating and I kinda wanted them both to die. Specific elements, from vampires playing baseball to vampires turning all glittery in the sunlight to vampires driving volvos all just made me feel embarrassed.

I haven't read the books. I can't say whether the source material is of a higher quality. It's possible. But, somehow, I doubt it.

Thankfully my wife isn't into Twilight; Harry Potter was bad enough, though I do have fond memories of the second movie...not that I remember much of the movie

I'd rather watch Soap Operas than Twilight...I'd rather watch nothing but The Count from Sesame street for the rest of my life than watch Twilight.

I would never let my child watch Twilight...I'd rather let them watch Underworld and risk them growing up unhealthy than let them watch Twilight.

I hear you. At least Twilight has an edge to it. High School Musical is a throwback to the beach party movies of the 1960s. Now, normally I'm all for "throwbacks", but there's something, I don't know, almost Stepford Children-like about the HSM cult that's being formed. Worse still are the godawful rip offs and clones being spawned by it.

As for Twilight, yeah it's a soap opera. And it's a soap opera with vampires. I don't see the problem. There are plenty of people going ga-ga over Dark Shadows which is the exact same concept. I don't agree with those who think the Twilight series is better than Harry Potter (books or films) because I do think the HP series has more universal appeal. But otherwise it is what it is, and just like with Harry Potter, you can like it or you can hate it, but it's getting kids and teens to read actual books that they want to read, and books of substantial length and complexity to boot. That has got to be a good thing.

My only worry at the moment is there doesn't seem to be a new Potter or a new Twilight on the horizon, and with both book series done and with the Potter films done in 2011 and Twilight by about the same time the rate they're going, we need to get the kids reading something new before they all slip back into spending all their time playing videogames and sending twits to each other. Part of me wants to see Twilight so I can have an informed opinion of the movie.

However from what I've heard of it it'd probably just piss me off and lead me to rant about how the woman writes her female characters like a 80's sci-fi anthology where the female characters life revolves around the male character and she has no goals of her own except to get pregnant and be with her lover forever.

Then there are the vampires.

Seriously there are a ton of mythological creatures other then Vampires, Werewolves and Zombies, some of them need loving too. Hey maybe the author/script writer(since there are numerous tv shows that are also dealing with it) could even make their own up. I know, I know, that would require imagination.

Agree. All that glitter, good feelings and creepy homogeneity. I want my kids nerdy, goofy and sociopathic, dammit, just like they should be!

Yeah, I was doubtful about Harry Potter, but it was strongly advised to me from people whose opinion I respect, so I gave it a try. And it was very good: kids will find fun and adventure, while more mature readers will find many layers of complexity and a ageless story (kids will get it too, in later books). On the other hand, Twillight was regarded as shit from everybody that ever came in contact with it.
