My wife is 6 years younger than me and more highly educated. I have a bachelor's degree and she's about to graduate with her M.B.A. She's managed to maintain a 4.0 GPA while working at a high stress job with a lot responsibility. I was chatting about this topic with a few of the girls at work today; interestingly enough, most of them also agreed with the basic idea behind it.

Hmm.

Well, the smarter woman is probably too smart to give up a good situation and be led astray by a momentary burst of excitement. And the guy is maybe less likely to feel bored or constrained by his smart wife. Genuinely clever (as opposed to those women afraid of their own shadow and unable to do anything in life without a guy leading the way) people are, imo, more personable, funnier, and a little more self sufficient.

The secret to a happy marriage for men is choosing a wife who is smarter and at least five years younger than you, say UK experts.

What absolute nonsense. There is no universal "secret to a happy marriage", because everyone is different. And can you imagine the uproar if they insisted a woman's secret to a happy marriage was a husband smarter than herself? The other way round, though, is apparently fine, and people cheerfully chirp out agreement with it.

I guess it must really suck to be a highly intelligent man or- if men are supposed to seek out smarter women- unintelligent woman, then?

As for younger, I'm always on the look out for older women, personally. At least they can usually be trusted to demonstrate a degree of sophistication and depth. Most of the women my own age I've encountered, or a few years older, no matter how nice they are, are not really women- they're girls. I'm sure I'd find a similar problem with most of the men my age, were I interested in men.

To me, a happy marriage will likely be with someone of around my own intelligence. Also, there are far more important things to consider than age and intellect...
