Hey, men! Want a long, happy marriage? Get a clever young bride!

OT, but I did read an article that said that doing internet searches helps keep your brain in shape.

So Wikipedia IS useful!

The secret to a happy marriage for men is choosing a wife who is smarter and at least five years younger than you, say UK experts.
so I don't really know what to make of it.

They picked the worst example to showcase.. IMO there is no way to say that Beyonce is smarter than Jay-Z..

What about someone who is at the same level of intelligence and who is about the same age? I think that is a good combination.. My GF is just as smart as I am. She is a graduate of Supaero and is only 1 year younger...

I can totally believe this study.

I've given up on finding someone who's outright, obviously smarter than me though. So I'm currently looking for someone who's differently smart instead.

Keep on trying man. You never know. There are some really cute CS chick that I've gotten to know.. On the other hand they are mostly foreign and most of them are somewhat neurotic.

Wouldn't it be ironic if you read about that while searching for it on the Internet and finding a Wikipedia article citing reference to it...

I'm so very fortunate to have a brilliant, young, and beautiful bride :) She is so much more than I deserve.

Just be compatible people. It's as simple as that...compatible in everything, your interests, long term goals, spending/saving styles, religion, children and let's not forget sex. So many people don't have real conversations before getting married and it's befuddling. Also compromise, consideration and committment are also very important.

I'm really smart -- 800 on SAT verbal! And only 26. Any hot, wealthy, British men in their early 30's out there for me?

I'll get back to you when I win the lottery & can afford the requisite cosmetic surgery... ;)

You know, just intuitively/anecdotally, this study rings true in some respects. Not as an absolute for everyone, of course, but I can see how some elements of it make sense.

Come to think of it, most happily-married couples I've encountered in my travels have usually had the man older than the woman - and almost invariably the woman is the smarter (or at least the more sensible) of the two. That's how it worked with my parents anyway. ;)

I'm about three months older and when it comes to smarts... it depends on the subject.

Now sensible/common sense.... she's rather well endowed in that area.

If by "British" you mean "Bostonian," and by "early 30s" you mean "pushing 50" then you've found your soul mate.
Stop teasing me! You know I'm a sucker for tall and lean older men with patches on their elbows! You do have patches on the elbows of at least one jacket, right?
I have them tattooed right on my actual elbows.
 You made me snort my tea!

Oh, you're cute as can be, and so long as you can support my hat habit...

^Well, I thought you were a Brit, I am wrong? Whatever, it's the accent that matters!
I wouldn't want someone smarter than me.
Really? I'd rather have someone smarter than dumber.

Though the most likely event, and the ideal, I think, is to find someone of similar intelligence who is smarter in some ways, and not as smart in others.

How could any guy be smarter than you TSQ?:)

This very closely resembles my situation and I can say that it's true. We've been married for almost 11 years and we're still going strong.

Hmmmm. I had a chance with someone 9 years my junior and very, very intelligent. Today, I regret passing on that. Somewhere, some lucky SOB has her.

I dunno, that sort of age difference seems more standard among people of my parents' generation and I wonder if it has to do with different attitudes about marriage entirely.

This is of course an entirely unscientific opinion, of course.

Well, I'm 5 years younger than Hubby, and I have a BA in English and Theater, whereas he has a GED.

And neither of us have been married before.

I guess that makes hubby one lucky bastard.
