The Amazing Race - 10/25/2009 - (Live Commentary/Discussion)

While I agree she was being childish, I don't think his attitude was helping at all. After the first couple minutes of her refusing to go down, he should have just said, "Fine, I'll go and wait for you down there. But if you don't go down the slide by the time the next team gets here, then it will be all on you for costing us the race." And then go down the slide and leave her up there to whine to the cameras.
Agreed. She was behaving horribly, but his attitude wasn't helping.

I thought what we SAW was bad. Oh, it gets worse.

TVGuide.com: Canaan, a lot of people think you were abusive toward her, trying to push her and pulling her fingers off the bar. Do you think you were out of line?
Canaan:
Abusive my butt! I did what any competitive person would do. I wanted to win the race. I tried every angle for 45 minutes.

FORTY-FIVE MINUTES? I'm trying to wrap my brain around that lovely little idea there. He spent 45 minutes trying to coax her in. They could have been done and gone, and the team behind them would have been out, but that whiney little Mika had to pout and literally cost them a million dollars because of water? What. The. Fuck?

Yeah, it was unfortunate... but then again, I look at it this way - if I had a chance to go on the race, I would take it - even if I knew there would be a big chance that I'd have to bungie off a cliff or a bridge (I'm fine with heights... heights and speed on the other hand ). I look at it this way - you get a free trip and are probably staying in hotels for a few weeks even if you are eliminated early just to keep the "integrity" of the show. The money's a bonus.

Just curious, what is the penalty if one person doesn't do the task. Is it the full penalty, or is it cut in half. I do agree she was being a wimp, and his attitude sucked, but why not go to the mat and hope for the best.

I imagine that counts as task incomplete... and there an hour or so penalty for doing a task wrong? They might have just skipped it and took the chance at the finish line I suppose.

The woman had a phobia and that is an irrational fear that cannot be controlled by the sufferer. Yes it was maddening, and she knew it - but there was nothing she could do to overcome it.

Still it made for damn fine drama and kept the globetrotters in the game.

I don't know ... I just think being a Globetrotter should disqualify them from from being in the race, unless it's a special Celebrity Amazing Race with all the teams being famous in some way.

Just like being in the NFL, or being a professional cheerleader, or being the winner of another reality show on the same network? I don't see it happening.

I am surprised that we have not seen the Globetrotters playing around more or trying to milk help from their celebrity status. So far they have been playing a straight up game like every other team.

Yeah, that's what I figure. At best, to most people they're just really tall dudes that stand out in a crowd.

Caanan was a complete ass to her, but Mika really blew it. As others mentioned, why are you bothering with the race if you are so crippled by something basic like that. Basic, in that you can be pretty sure there are going to be some heights and height-related challenges showing up in the race.

The slide is tall (I have been on that one), but not as tall as the really tall slides, and certainly not like doing bungie off a bridge or something. Slide down, it will be over in five seconds, and you will barely remember it when you're feet hit the mat. I loved how Caanan chastised the 'Trotters for ragging on her right after he had been calling her names and trying to push her to the slide.

"Trust me," he says just before trying to pry her fingers off the hold bar at the top of the slide.

Or like being Chinese and spending half the last season in Asian countries where you're the only team that can speak the language?

Last season's TAR finale was the FIRST time I did not watch because I LOATHED every one of the last three teams. The fact that the Asian couple won made me VERY angry. Fortunately this season has pretty much all likeable people.

Well ... no. Being smart is one thing. Being famous is another.

What I've always liked about TAR is that it's "ordinary" people running it. While almost everyone would like a million bucks, the appeal of the show is that regular folks get a shot at it.

The Harlem Globetrotters ARE famous, and have been for decades, despite (mostly) younger folks not knowing who they are today. I also thought it was odd to have those Survivor idiots on some seasons ago. They had their chance.

Just go ahead and HAVE a slightly shorter Celebrity AR. It would be fun between regular seasons.

But leave the regular races to unknowns.

Being able to speak a language(through being bilingual from cultural happenstance)and having the good fortune to end up in countries where this is the native tongue does not make one smart. It is simply "the luck of the draw".
