Don’t miss it tonight at 8/7c on CBS!

Thanks to Steven for hosting last weeks thread!

Whoa! I missed last week. Lance and Keri are gone? Hallelujah! :D

No kidding. Lance was a jerk (to be nice).

I agree with Canadave, they need more self-driving segments. I still want to see what would happen if the teams were forced to tackle driving around Winnipeg. :D

You know, sometimes I think these racers do stupid things just for the hell of it. :p

My choice for the detour this week is the gold one. So what if it is constantly changing. Just add a few more coins or take some off. Seems like it would be easier than trying to assemble a dozen smoking pipe thingies.

Boy, these people are dunces at math. At least the poker players were able to figure out what they needed to do right away.

Why does these people go on the race? I mean, they know there's going to be heights, they know there's going to be water, etc. If you really can't handle it, don't sign up for the Amazing Race!

From my blog ...

Amazing Race actually started on time tonight! I'm sitting here, tuned in, and they show a preview of the episode. In it, a girl named Mika is at the top of a waterslide, absolutely terrified of water. Her partner is trying to convince her that if she doesn't go down, they will lose a million dollars. He tries to touch her and she backs away, pleading with the cameraman to stop this so she can go home.

Meanwhile, I'm asking "Where's the popcorn? This is going to be entertaining."

And boy, howdy, was it ever!

I'm not going to get into the boring details of .. well, everything else that happened. I'm skipping right to the last five minutes, because it was all them. Five solid minutes (not including several more minutes of a commercial break), he was trying to convince her that it's simply WATER and wasn't going to kill her or anything. Another team shows up, and she's still sitting there, refusing to go. The rules state that at any challenge point, if the team ahead refuses to go, after two minutes, they must step aside and let the next team go.

And it cost them. The other team was totally mocking her, saying if she didn't want to go, don't listen to the big mean guy telling her to do it. Because water is wet, ya know.

At two minutes, she stepped aside, and they just flew down. Then her partner told her flat out she had just cost them the million, and went down the slide (which may have been 20 feet, if that. Big whoop.). He waited for several minutes, but she decided to walk back down the steps. Together, they walked to the finish line without completing the challenge. Well, without HER completing it.

And it DID cost them. The team that waited and then took their turn was, at that point, the last team. Since she refused to go, they switched places, and Mika got her team eliminated.

And it was hilarious.

I think it was last season, there was another woman who was deathly afraid of water. There was a challenge that involved being near a swimming pool, and she completely lost her damned mind.

WHY do people sign up for these shows, knowing that absolutely anything could happen? If they have a deathly fear of something simple like water, just don't go!

But if they do, they should let me know, so I can have popcorn ready.

...and went down the slide (which may have been 20 feet, if that. Big whoop.).

It was slightly more than 20 feet - they made a point of saying the slide was 6 stories high. So, depending on what constitutes a storey in Dubai, that slide could well have been 50+ feet high...

Still, it is bizarre to go on something like The Amazing Race despite having such an overwhelming fear of water...

That was ridiculous on her part. I don't mind him trying to force her down the slide because she was acting like a 3 year old anyway. And it's a million dollars!! If my partner had done what she did I wouldn't be speaking to them for quite a while after the race.

I have fears just like anyone else, but I would overcome them for the chance at a million dollars and just the ability to continue racing.

She was being especially childish when she kept whining, "wwhhhhhyyyy" and asking her partner why he hated her. Very sad to see something so harmless turn her into a crying child.

Here's a new rule for anybody who actually wants their relationship to succeed:

Don't go on the Amazing Race with your partner if he/she is deathly afraid of something as basic as water or heights.

Seriously, people, this isn't that complicated. I'm actually surprised they seemed comfortable with each other at the end.

While I agree she was being childish, I don't think his attitude was helping at all. After the first couple minutes of her refusing to go down, he should have just said, "Fine, I'll go and wait for you down there. But if you don't go down the slide by the time the next team gets here, then it will be all on you for costing us the race." And then go down the slide and leave her up there to whine to the cameras.
