The new "going to warp" effect

My ideal warp (for now) would have been XI-style flash/stretchy ship plus the TNG-style white warp flash at the end.

In surround-sound, of course.

The final scene of Generations?

A hybrid. Imagine the JJPrise warping like we see it in the film already, just add the TNG style white flash when the ship disappears.

On another note, after watching the youtube warp video posted above, it seems TNG actually brought back the white warp flash from TMP. Even if the link was unintentional, I never noticed it in TMP before.

I prefer the new Warp effect. It's actually closer to the real science of it.

Warp engines power up, then BOOM we accelerate inside a bubble of normal space, with the rest of the universe rushing past us really fast.

Found another youtube video, depicting the XI Enterprise going to warp. Seems the star stretching when initiating warp only happens if you're looking from the perspective of the bridge. Can't remember how it's looked in other Trek when seen from this perspective.

I thought the Star Wars reference was very in your face obvious. It's not a reference anymore, it's basically a carbon copy of all jump to hyperspace scenes in the original trilogy. "Punch it", followed by an almost exact copy of all the hyperjump shot, followed by the ship just jumping with a loud bang, just like in all the Star Wars movies.

The warp speed scenes in the previous movies, and the TV shows, are totally different from the Star Wars hyperspeed scenes (they are probably inspired by the awesomeness of it, but they were never ever copying the scene shot for shot). But this movie really ripped it off.

To be honest, it wasn't so in your face for me, since it's now the standard method for showing going to FTL speeds, rather than a direct homage. The only show I can think of since Star Wars that has a ship going to FTL without doing the stretch out, followed by bright light/loud noise, or some close variant of, is nuBSG, and then only because it doesn't have the ships move at all, and the transfer seems instantaneous.

The 'Punch it' is about the only thing that makes it very 'Wars-y', at least for me. YMMV

I completely agree. This new effect makes the old warp effects look very slow and cumbersome in comparison.

This is definitely my favorite warp effect. I never cared for the rainbow surrounding the ship in the TOS movies, and even in the 80s I thought the stretchy rubber band effect of TNG was cheesy as hell.

And the white swirly light effect while at warp is MUCH more visually dynamic too. The streaking stars of TNG were not terribly exciting and didn't convey a great sense of speed even at high warp.

Anyone remember the alternate Enterprise warp out shot from the second trailer? The Enterprise faces the camera as it does in the final film, but instead of just rushing past it, the camera tracks along with the ship as it jumps to warp.

I wish they had kept that scene, as opposed to the one in the final film.

The new warp effect, which I really like, makes me wonder how they will interpret visually the USS Enterprise's exterior shot while at warp?

I haven't seen the trailer in a while, by I think that might have just been two separate shots that were spliced together...

I think it was two completely different shots because in the trailer version the composition of the Enterprise and the space station in the background is a little different, plus she flies from left to right, instead of right to left. And trust me, I realize that the shot isnt just flipped cause the lighting is different too.

Going from memory, since I only saw it once back in May...

I didn't really care for the seemingly Star Wars/Dr Who inspired vortex effect. I prefer an increasing amount of streaking starlight at different speeds. Blurring all that into a bluey white mess completely spoils the journey and travel is reduced to appearing almost instantaneous.

I disagreed. I thought that the film made warp drive feel like it took time for the first time in years. I mean, the Enterprise only ever travelled between Earth and Vulcan, yet it took quite a while in either direction.

I like the new warp SFX. I also liked when all the ships took off for Vulcan (while Sulu had the parking brake on). It really conveyed the speed at which they take off as well as the energy needed to do so.

They mirrored the shot for the trailer. And edited one of the in-warp shots into it.

Im sorry but it's not a mirrored shot, nor is it two edited together. If you slow down frame by frame you can see the distorted shape of the Enterprise fly by. Its a totally new shot. They didnt just splice two existing ones together.

I checked again. It is mirrored, and edited together with the other one. The distored shape of the flyby is because there was a flyby warp scene in the movie (it's the only shortly before they jump into Titan's atmosphere).

I really like the new warp effect. Not as cheesy as the TNG effect, and not as horribly flashy as the TOS movie effect.

You know looking at it again, Im gonna agree with you. For some reason I thought the composition was much more different, but you are right on both accounts.

I loved it when the gradual warp build up went from "rainbow" to "plaid".

The "BANG" from the new warp effect is really awesome if you have a subwoofer/ surround sound system :D
