"Forbidden Planet" as TOS prequel?

There aren't any official drawings of the ship that I know of - only the construction blueprints for the sets. They're pretty fascinating, as they even specify materials, like chinese silk for the "ceiling" above the upper deck.

Johnson added retractable hull weapons emplacements that in my opinion are another example of "Star Trek logic" - there's neither evidence of them in the movie nor any suggestion that the ship is designed for or expects to encounter space combat. I'm also not sure that he was able to work out a sensible explanation for the position of the "crane" and associated hatch on the main floor (the hatch the Id monster entered through). I'll have to study them some more.
I've got the set plans in the ol' Cinefantastique on Forbidden Planet, but I've not seen Johnson's take on the sets.

By the fifties, the Hayes office was a shell of its former self. The censorship was more of a tradition by that point.

As a tv example of how the censors were more bark than bite, on "I Love Lucy", they got around the two-twin-beds idiocy by pushing the two beds together.

There's a "Sickbay" and "Recovery ward" called out on the main deck. Again, Johnson tends to default to Trekisms (yes, I know that these are naval terms not invented by Trek) so it's not surprising that he doesn't use the term "infirmary."

Because I can never resist:

STAR TREK 0: THE FORBIDDEN PLANET
Do you know what is really scary about this? It works, on so many levels.

I've always felt that "Forbidden Planet" makes a pretty cool prequel to the TOS era. Nothing in it really contradicts anything from TOS, and the Earth ship (and her crew, technology, color scheme, and uniforms) aren't that different from what we saw in "The Cage," so it's easy to see a logical progression from the "Forbidden Planet" type of stuff to "The Cage" (which of course segways into TOS). On top of it all, Gene Roddenberry said that the movie inspired him to make TOS, so even as far as the real-world goes, it's certainly a type of prequel.

Anyone who's familiar with the film - what do you think? Agree or disagree? Do you think it's a neat idea or a stupid one? Post below! :techman:

I only skimmed through the first and last couple of pages, but I just want to say that Forbidden Planet is my favorite movie of all time. Ever. I love that movie. I watch it at least 3 or 4 times a month. I even have it on my iPOD so I can watch it wherever I am. It's the only movie I've ever watched that I don't get tired of watching. That sounds crazy, I know. But I just love that movie.

Anyway, I too have had the thought of trying to fit FP into the continuity of Star Trek. It just seems...logical. Someone earlier said that they watch FP, Cage, and WNMHGB in succession as a marathon. I need to try that. I bet it would be awesome. One more thing, did anyone ever notice that in the opening scene of FP, Lt. Farman says that they will reach DC point at "1701". That is interesting since the Enterprise is NCC-1701, no? Just a useless little fact for your consideration. Live long and prosper.

It is also interesting that the transporter room in TOS looked a lot like the deceleration stations on the C57-D.

"Seventeen oh one" has been mentioned before, as has that the DC stations in FP clearly inspired both the transporter of Trek and the freezing tubes on Lost in Space.

Anyone know of any links with good screen caps (hi res) and/or unique artwork from FP?

I did a Google search but found nothing worthy of creating some nice desktop backgrounds that are FP related.

Specifically some nice landscapes of Altair-4 and the spaceship.

'thanks,

I have Forbidden Planet on dvd. I even have some screencaps of my own. What are folks looking for?

I've got it on DVD too and I have many, many screencaps. When I get home from work, I'll post a few for you guys.
