Dexter S4, the season to date (thru Dex Takes a Holiday)

So, whaddya think...

This season is shaping up to be better than S3 but probably not fully back up to S1/2 levels. Michael C. Hall is sure bringin' the crazy this season, tho, which is good to see - I thought S3's problem was that the danger factor that Dex poses wasn't as present as previously.

Dex Takes a Holiday is the best episode so far this season - great scene with Zoe in the men's room where Dex once again proves his greatest weapon is his wits - and he was very funny in some of the over-the-top nutso scenes.

The twist ending promises to send Dex fully into psycho mode, at least for a while. That's my chief wish, he needs to be pushed beyond his tolerance limits so that finally the facade starts to crack. I understand why the writers are hesitant to really start into this, because it's the beginning of the end for the series and the ratings are still strong and nobody wants the fun to end, but sooner or later, they've gotta start thinking about their endgame, even if it's still a few seasons off.

How I think the season might end: Dexter saves Lundy from Trinity and in the process reveals the truth about himself, at least that he isn't the meek lab rat he appears to be. The question then becomes, what does Lundy do about it (if anything)?

(Assuming, that is, that Lundy survives. What a waste if he doesn't.)

I'm loving most of this season. So far the only part I really dislike are the over-reliance on his visions of his father. It's too Multiple Personality Disorder-y for my tastes. His dad is just too much of an amoral guardian angel and reeks of deus ex machina. Dexter isn't insane, but this paints him that way.

Well... he's not insane in the MPD sort of way. He's fully cognizant of who and what he is and he knows exactly what he's doing every time he kills someone.

The stuff with LaGuerta and Angel feels awkward, too. I don't see why Angel would risk them both losing their jobs for such a petty reason. I also don't really care about any stories involving Doake's replacement (I can't even be bothered to remember his name). I have no idea what they're trying to do by making him a dirty-cop-who's-not-dirty-but-is who also sleeps with an investigative journalist who he knows'll write anything he says, but still says it. Just a really lame character all around. Doakes was way more interesting.

Otherwise, I really like it. I'm guessing whoever shot Lundy and Deb was either the holiday killer or Anton, but that's just a random hunch. I only suspect Anton because of the look in Lundy's eyes and how Deb was the first to get shot. And I only suspect the holiday killer because it helps get the show back on track.

Course, they could always be one in the same. But that's just a wild thought.

Lundy's blank stare can only mean he's dead meat... He left a clue on Dex's voicemail, so I think it's up to Dex to get Trinity.

The show really does need to move forward a little, how many more seasons do they think they will get? At most three, I'm thinking two is more likely.

Lundy is dead according to the two preview scenes on the Showtime website.

As for seasons, the show has been renewed for season 5. Hopefully they wrap it up with a season 1 or 2 level kind of season then. Go out on top.

Michael has hinted he will not renew his contract past the current deal of season 5, which would be a good time to stop (60 episodes). The show is still a joy to watch but I have to admit to being dissapointed that were only getting patchy details/scenes of the Trinity Killer. However the recent episode was the best fo the season to date and a nice WTF ending though I fear that they may of tried too much too early because doesn't make sense for Trinity to use a gun and too out of character for Anton. I would love the season to end with Deb dying and before she does Dexter telling her his secret, not too mention Deb's death could even make Dexter crack.

Season 3 was my favourite I loved the relationship between Miguel & Dexter and found Jimmy Smits to be the best actor on TV last season and he should of won an EMMY.

My ranking to date from best to least best....

3,1,2

Well, I called it. :) (on Lundy that is.)

I think Trinity did it, and chose the way he performed the murder to make it look as though it was something else (whoever shot took lundy's wallet.)

Did the killer take Lundy's wallet, or his audio recorder? I assumed the latter, since Trinity saw Lundy taking notes earlier in the episode.

As for Lundy biting the bullet, I called it earlier in the episode. I'm watching the current season with friends and we were all talking about our theories. My theory was that Trinity would kill Lundy and then Deb would step in and take over the case. I think my theory will hold true.

I've been a little disappointed with the season up until the last episode. It's been moving too slow. Not enough of the Trinity killer, IMO. I'd like to learn more about him. Hopefully things will pick up.

My favorite season was season 2 - it was a great ride from beginning to end.

hmm, the recorder makes more sense. maybe I'll watch the scene again somewhere to be sure.

I called it two weeks ago on this board. Lucky guess

Season 2 was my favorite too. This season has been a little slow, but I've gotten used to the pace. when season 3 came out, the slower pace was killing me. It all paid off in the end though, and I like where this story is headed.

The ending was a complete shock to me. I'm glad I don't read spoilers for this show... because I was under the impression Anton was going to be waiting on them when there was an awkward scene with them outside.

I'm with MCH. Six seasons feels just right for this show.

I think S6 needs to be The Season Where Deb Knows, if they can finagle a way for her to know and not feel obligated to rat Dex out, or if not, it should be The Season Where Deb Gets Increasingly Suspicious, Leading to the Motherfrakking Mother of All Finales.

They definitely should not kill Deb prematurely. She needs to be around for the big finale. Other than Deb, Dexter and of course the kids, everyone else is expendable.

HOLY CRAP. Just watched "Holiday." I did NOT expect that. So, was it Trinity or just the "vacation killers" hitting another hotel?

I would LOVE to see Deb track down Trinity.

I thought it was rather touching when Dexter realized---er, while killing someone---that he IS actually fond of his family and DOES care about them. He actually said it out loud and the words seemed to astonish him: "I would rather they know the truth than have to live without them." That is quite a revelation for him.

That is EXACTLY what I thought too. I was watching the episode on my computer reading a website and when that gunshot went off I looked up and was like WTF! Then they showed Debra and I had to rewind the ep to see what was going on. When Lundy dropped I thought it was Trinity, to be honest... once again, had to wind it back.

Definitely the best episode of the season. Can't wait for next Sunday. Dexter is going to go out of his skull to get this guy, especially if Debra is in any kind of serious situation. I was a little disappointed with the lack of Masuka. Christina Cox deserves special praise for her role as Zoey Kruger... she played crazy cop really well... good yang to Dexter's yin.

You guys think this means the end of Anton? I hope so, never really cared for the character.

But how is that a revelation? In S2, he was conflicted whether to give himself up and/or let Doakes go (taking the risk that Doakes would succeed in exposing him) and worried more about the devastating impact that would have on his loved ones than his own fate (he's been resigned from the start that "eventually" justice will catch up with him). Even in S1, when he thought he might be exposed, he commented glumly in voiceover that Astor and Cody would only remember him as "that guy who broke their hearts."

That's an example of how this show is, little by little, starting to stagnate. They're making dramatic points that they've already made. They need Dexter to evolve so that they can keep the story fresh, but making him more domesticated doesn't give them anyplace to go, plot-wise. It ramps the tension down when they should be ramping it up.

Making Dexter more feral and dangerous is the way to ramp the dramatic tension up, so that they accellerate to the final season, not putter to a halt. Of course then the problem is that the audience will lose sympathy for Dexter.

The only solution I can see is that they need to start treating the Dark Passenger more as a separate persona, distinct from Dexter. The notion that the DP is a distinct entity has already been introduced; they just haven't done much with it. Some huge catastrophic trauma needs to happen to Dexter to "kick" the Dark Passenger free, or at least undermine Dexter's control of it. Remember, Dexter, not the DP, is the one who insists on killing only the guilty. The DP would kill anyone it could.
