I was like "huh?" and then I realized what I done. I would like to claim credit for being witty but honestly it just came out that way.

Beyond 'filing a false police report', assuming one was filed, which is not usually something one is arrested for, what charges do you propose?
In particular, I'd love to know how waterboarding them is justifiable.
It is likely to be a civil matter of demanding payment for the rescue attempts, if it can be shown they staged it.
Oh, they can be charged with the false police report and then held liable for expenses involved in the recovery of the balloon. You may call it ludicrous, which is fine since that's your opinion. I know someone who works Search and Rescue out in Utah, and his county is among those out West that has started to bill people should a S&R endeavor take place due to negligence, etc. Funds and manpower are scarce.

News must travel slow to the UK. There is more and more coming out that you've even missed in this thread. The Balloon Boy vomited during an interview (nerves? Because of what, you may ask); the comment about "being for the show"; how the parents called the news station FIRST, rather than 911; the emergence of a former co-worker stating how the father has always been about garnering attention; the now revelations that the family has financial problems.....

I wouldn't call it 'ludicrous', that's exactly what should happen. What I think is ludicrous is the overreaction here that seems ready to treat the guy like a murderer because he dared make the American TV audience look gullible.
I know someone who works missing person searches too. Me. And yes, we would bill someone who had deliberately sent us on a wild goose chase, the helicopter alone costs thousands an hour. Not to mention other manpower, shipping in experts, diversion of resources from other activities, abuse of the public awareness system damaging its effectiveness, etc etc. I'm on board with charging the guy every cent it cost, but let's tone down the hyperbole a bit, shall we?

Where is all this coming from? Because I suggested it might be worth actually showing to the civil standard of proof that they staged it before slapping them with liability for the cots? Horrors, please, shoot my bleeding liberal heart. I never once said 'it's not a big deal', or 'what if the boy was in the balloon' so you just plain made those up.
I am well aware of the mounting evidence; in fact I believe it was a hoax at this point. But liability comes with certain standards of proof.
I wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be staged because, well, human beings are capable of many things and this is not beyond them. Out of all the things you mentioned though, the comment during the interview and the possibility that they did not alert 911 first are the red flags to me. I haven't seen the interview, so I can't really comment specifically on that.
But I mean yeah, kids vomit. Hell, I get so nervous before speaking in public sometimes that I get sick. The former co-worker thing doesn't mean anything, because often other people will come out of the woodwork for their own moment in the spotlight. And this isn't really the best way to make money. I mean what, they might get money out of a few interviews? It just doesn't make sense.
Either way, it's clear the police are taking this seriously and the boy is safe, so that's what is important, in my mind.

I doubt it, considering his family has been on Wife Swap twice. That throw doubt in the face of his not being comfortable in front of the camera -- but hey, at least he's OK, right. Even if it were staged, everyone should sit around and have a good, hearty chuckle about it.

But the focus on wife swap was really the entire family. This was more of a focus on him.
Wasting manpower, time and resources isn't typically very funny. I'm sure the dozens of emergency workers, medics, police, etc that dropped what they were doing (helping people with real problems) to go on this wild goose chase are going to sit around and laugh about it when this is all revealed to be a hoax.
Which it will be. Anybody who still thinks this was legit after all of the evidence that has come out in the last 24 hours is a fool.

Maybe he's a bigamist and it was a different wife & kids each time?
Maybe put him on Wife Swap with Kate from Jon& Kate Plus 8. I bet somebody would be in the balloon next time it launched.
