Deep Space Nine Spin-off Considered Better Than the Original....

I don't know about this. I grew up with TNG, and while the first few seasons had some undeniably hokey moments, the last season of DS9 jumped the shark. Don't get me wrong, DS9 is my favorite of all Trek series. But they're fundamentally different shows, with different premises. TNG tracks a starship Captain on his adventures through space, which inevitably means bumping into new aliens, technology, subspace distortions, etc. DS9 stays in one place, making it ideal for more sociological sci-fi.

And here's me thinking he's talking about Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. It's not a spinoff.

No I jest. :p

if TNG had members turning into children, than DS9 had characters singing nursery rhymes.

Granted that both shows had their share of stupid episodes, but didn't TNG have more? Ie: all the many 'holodeck malfunction' episodes (I know DS9 had two as well).

Anyhow, I agree with the spirit of the sentiment written on the list even though it doesn't make its point as concisely as it might have.

^ Good point. And I agree with you - against TOS it's a much tougher call. I still favor DS9....but not by nearly as much as I do against TNG.

That said, I don't know that I agree with all the shows on the original list.

While I love Addison Montgomery, Private Practice is NOT Grey's Anatomy....and is rather boring by comparison, with a much less likable supporting cast.

And no WAY Torchwood is better than Doctor Who. How anyone could even postulate that is beyond me.

Finally, I loved Cheers...and hated Fraiser (except for his younger brother - that guy was funny, and his father too. Fraiser himself was just annoying)

I think part of the problem is that the title says one thing, but the article says another. The title talks about "Spinoffs better than the original" while the intro paragraph says, "Here's our look back at the best spin-offs from the past two decades:" Heck, even the descriptions sometimes concede that the spinoffs may or may not actually be better than the originals (for example, "No, we're not crazy enough to say that "Angel" was better than "Buffy" overall").

Heh. So much for consistency.
