As established this season, Echo still has those memories, so she knows her way around. Basically, I think its Paul and the promise that he will help her find Caroline that's keepin' her in the Dollhouse, since she can pretty much leave at any time, as Echo.

Well, we just found out that she's going to need to get that GPS removed. I assume Dr. Saunders was able to remove her GPS by herself, but Echo doesn't have that knowledge base.

^

Saunders's GPS was probably removed when she went from bein' Whiskey to Saunders. She wouldn't have had to worry about it, since she wasn't really an Active anymore.

That would seem like a strange decision by the Dollhouse. She has an imprint. Her body is still under contract. Why would they remove the GPS? Are they worried that Saunders would find it and discover her past?

I prefer the idea that she removed it without permission.

The imprint, as explained in last week's episode, was what kept her in the house. She was alwasy there. They wouldn't need her to have a GPS strip anymore.

And, even if she was under contract, who is to say that Adele would continue to honor it, after Whiskey was no longer able to make money as an Active?

So ratings are in with a very slight uptick. 2.56 > 2.09 > 2.25. Is this enough to keep the remaining filmed episodes actually airing? Enough to keep production on the full 13?

I hope so but with FOX who knows? Do you know if that is the composite rating(first halfhour/second halfhour) or just the first halfhour? I'm hoping its the composite and enough to buoy cause next weeks Sierra heavy episode looks good. Someone in last weeks thread said its the story on his/her checklist to see.

Deleted/alternate scene? The room was concrete, and Echo was offerin' herself up for the slaughter, not defendin' herself from the mallet.
We have to assume one or the other. My guess is the fight scene was edited making this a 'deleted scene' vs an alternate. That eventual DVD should explain it and I'm willing to wait for 22 episodes and summer '10 to get that by the way in case some FOX person is lurking by the off chance.

Adele seems to treat original personalities with some level of decency (despite the tendencies of the company as a whole), but you make a very good point regarding the imprint.

Topher's been really, really fucking up lately.

That's pretty much his M.O. He acts based upon his latest "spark of genius" and never bothers to do any major testing or contemplation of consequences.

Well, as pointed out by Boyd in this week's episodes, to say Topher has an ethical dilemma is really sayin' that something should never, ever be done.

I voted Average.

It feels like they're always changing the rules of imprinting. Originally, the actives had to be hooked up to the equipment in Topher's lab in order to be imprinted. To reverse the process (or "wipe"), go back to the lab. Now, a wipe can be done remotely. And not only that, the imprints for different actives in the field can get mixed up if the "bio-link grid" is glitchy.

Echo as Kiki: Never during my college days did I ever observe such an airhead. Kiki was so much the stereotype that it was painful to watch her. I was pleased, however, when she stabbed the professor. It's exactly what a student would have wanted to do, once she learned that the course for which she was being sexually harassed would never help her get a job in the real world. ;)

I think that's part of the point of the show. The dangers increase as the technology improves/evolves. This eventually leads to the downfall of much of (if not all of) civilization. As for remote-wipes: we've been hearing about this technology for a while now (starting with its shocking use by Alpha and most recently with our glimpse of the future).

Sub par episode for my money, and not NEARLY enough to fend off the impending cancellation.

The idea of remote wipes has been that no one thought it was possible until Alpha (we assume) did it to Echo in "Gray Hour." And in the future of "Epitaph One," it looks like any piece of tech with a speaker poses a danger of remote programming someone's personality. So while the bio-link-grid stuff in this episode was kinda fuzzy, the idea of remote wiping is an established one.

Not to mention with how bad security is at the Dollhouse (Terry/Viktor esacping with his uncle) I'm amazed it's remained a secret for this long.

That was terrible security. I didn't really think about Echo escaping last week. I figure getting in or out of the complex can't be that hard considering the ill-equipped Ballard & Alpha were able to do it back in "Briar Rose." But why didn't Boyd have people guarding the room containing the suspected serial killer?

Of course, poor security is a Joss Whedon trademark. It's rediculous how many times people broke into the Wolfram & Hart offices during Angel Season 5.

"This place might as well be a bus station."

She was programmed to the professor's specs, not as a real coed. He was acting out his personal perverted fantasy.

All the Battlestar stars just reinforce the idea that these "dolls" are like robots with skin. Is that the little joke for BSG fans? Compliant skinjobs. The end of this show has to have an apocolyptic Battle of the Dolls. :)

Not to mention how Wesley Windom-Pryce was able to operate as a watcher, daily, from the Sunnydale High School library without ever being noticed by a school official or non-involved student. And Giles had a medeival weapon collection right there in plain sight.

To the episode at hand: I enjoyed the moral juxtapositon of the Dollhouse itself with a psychopathic kidnapper who turns women into his own "dolls." And the secondary juxtaposition of the psycho kidnapper with the teacher who fantasises about blackmailing a student into sex. Lotsa varying degrees of the same moral question.

On Echo: She has become the holodeck of the series. No matter what fantasy she's been programmed with, she manages to malfunction and hurt somebody.

I think that it may be an early glimpse of how he was in 'Epitaph One'.

I think that this is the best of the season so far. I just hope they get to continue it. Fox did seem to hype the episode with Summer Glau, so there is some hope I guess.

On the subject of Giles' Sunnydale High library, I thought MOO kinda had a point in "Gingerbread." Why does Giles keep all of these occult books in the general stacks rather than in his private collection? (Or did he order them by falsifying school expenditures forms, claiming they were copies of Huckleberry Finn or something?)

And the secondary juxtaposition of the psycho kidnapper with the teacher who fantasises about blackmailing a student into sex.

Is it really "blackmail" if she deserved the bad grade in the first place? If she's sleeping with the guy so he'll give her an A she doesn't deserve, wouldn't that be more like "bribery"?

I did like that Echo was programmed to be a character from the book he was teaching. That was kind of original.

Careful: saying bad things about the Wife of Bath is a good way to get angry Chaucerians to start hurling barely-comprehensible insults your way. Kiki =! Alisoun. The former is a naive airhead, the latter a wordly and sharp-witted woman.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
