How Many Copies Do You Expect Star Trek Will Sell? (DVD/Blu-ray)

About a month to go until Star Trek hits the shelves. Wolverine sold three million copies on DVD in the US during its first two weeks. I guess worldwide (DVD and Blu-ray) it has sold 4-5 million copies.
Here´s the top ten in 2009 on DVD in the US so far.

How many copies do you think Star Trek will sell?

My guess is somewhere between 8-15 million copies worldwide.
It will do very well in the US, Canada and the UK, especially on Blu-ray and maybe break some sales records?

I'll go with at least 12-13 million in the US.

Iron Man, I believe, still has the record for first week DVD/BD sales, at 7.2 million.

Wolverine actually sold over 3 million in its first week. The 2.4 million number is just DVD. It sold another 800k on BD.

Yeah, you are right more than 20 percent of the copies were BD.

The title is this year’s No. 1 Blu-ray in first-week unit sales, according to the studio. More than 20% of its copies were sold in the high-definition format, said Fox. That outdoes the industry average, which Rentrak’s Retail Essentials pegs at 12.5%.

The studio also is calling Wolverine its best performing Blu-ray title to date, topping previous record holder Quantum of Solace, released in March. The studio would not specify DVD or Blu-ray unit sales or revenue.

Honestly, I don't have a clue about DVD\Blu-ray sales and how many copies is fantastic, how many is good, how many is bad, what the high & low records are etc etc

Ok, some facts and some guesses:

*A monster hit on Blu-ray sells 1-2 million copies worldwide. So far I think only a couple of movies have sold more than one million copies in the US. Fewer people own Blu-ray players in Europe so it´s likely no title have sold more than one million copies there.

*A huge hit on DVD probably sells 20-30 million units worldwide.
Why?
I haven´t found a better selling movie on the-numbers.com, which tracks DVD sales in the US since 2007, than Transformers.
It has sold 15.4 million units in the US since it was released. I guess it has sold 5-15 million copies in the rest of the world.
Maybe there are bigger hits, but there can´t be that many.

The 22 million number is definitely just US. Not sure about the 40 million by 2006, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was just the US.

I'd read that it's tracking to be the third or fourth best-selling DVD of the year, but I have no idea what that would mean in actual numbers.

Top three this year so far:

1. Twillight 9,175,477 units
2. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa 6,942,277 units
3. Bolt 4,569,140 units

If Star Trek is tracking to be third or fourth, it will sell more copies than Bolt. I can only see a few upcoming releases this year that probably will do better than Star Trek, and that´s Transformers 2, Harry Potter and Up.
Star Trek may end up somewhere between 5-10 million copies.

There was a thread on Boxmojo.com about dvd sales. TDk sold over 17m since being release and TF 1 was over 16. Iron man sold over 13m.

I have been wondering how many Star Trek DVDs will sell for a while and so I decided to do some wonderful Microsoft Excel calculations. What I did was divide the total domestic box office by the number of DVDs sold to get a ratio of Box Office to DVD Units sold using the Top 15 of 2008 and 2007. I am using the-numbers.com for these infos, they are DVD sales only and do not include BluRay.

The conclusion I have come to is (based on the-numbers.com):

High End: 16,071,502 - Based on '300'
Low End: 4,041,570 - Based on 'Quantum of Solace'

Average 2007 Releases (Top 15) - 9,730,946
Average 2008 Releases (Top 15) - 7,834,825

If I base it on another source that doesn't list all the top 15 but does include blu-ray (this one) I get:

High End: 17,027,282 - Based on '300'
Low End: 5,760,434 - Based on 'Indiana Jones 3'

So.... armed with that information I am gonna say Star Trek will sell the same ratio as Iron Man... which means:

Iron Man = 9,040,000 - So Star Trek would sell: 7,300,000 - DVDs only
Iron Man = 12,950,000 - So Star Trek would sell: 10,500,000 - DVD and Blu-Ray​

And just to clarify how I did this: If you take Transformers box office of $320 Million and divide it by the number of DVDs sold (17.4million) you get a figure of 0.054. If I then apply this to Star Treks box office of 258 Million I get 14 million, so if Star Trek sells on DVD like Transformers did it would sell 14 Million.

FWIW, Quantum of Solace is the top-selling BD of the first half of 2009.

The latest installment of the James Bond series, 'Quantum of Solace', is the top-selling title on Blu-ray for this year through June 7, followed by 'The Dark Knight', according to research published today by Home Media Magazine. In turn, the caped crusader is handily the winner in the all-time sales category.

Here is the list of the top 10 sellers of the year so far:

As you can see, despite being a 2008 release, 'The Dark Knight' has been selling very strongly through 2009, even more than 'Twilight'.

Yeah, I can only think of a couple too. Dark Knight has sold 2.8 million worldwide (2 million in the US), as of February 2009. Iron Man has likely sold over 2 million in the US as well

I think Star Trek (2009) belongs in a similar category in home theatre terms as movies like The Matrix, Gladiator, Transformers, The Dark Knight & Iron Man. Visually stunning, action packed crowd pleasers with great sound/visual effects which combine to form a great way to show off your home cinema system and therefore its going to be a must have. 10 Million is surely the target, though I have my doubts because its called 'Star Trek' and that still might put some people off... but hey it made $258million in NA so maybe I shouldn't have these doubts anymore.

In all honesty I am still haunted by Nemesis flopping like it did and yet being blind to how inevitable that was until the day after it opened (and got beat by J-Lo) :P

Just for a frame of reference, Transformers 2 sold around 3.6 million DVDs and 1.2 million BDs in its first week.
