Not including LOTR or HARRY POTTER (or any other fantasy movie), or any COMIC BOOK movies, what do you think is the best SCIFI movie ever adapted from a book?

I discounted Fantasy books because, well, I haven't seen or read many of them...someone else can start a Fantasy thread, and thats cool...but this is for SCIFI movies only....

Some contenders:

THE TIME MACHINE (George Pal version)

20,000 LEAGUES BENEATH THE SEA (Disney version)

THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN (theatrical version)

BLADE RUNNER

JURASSIC PARK.

Depends if I can count 2001: A Space Odyssey or not. The book and film were written co-currently by Clarke and Kubrick, but both were based upon at least one previous short story by Clarke called 'The Sentinel.'

Blade Runner is another obvious choice, too.

P.S. I'm just going to throw the idea out there that the best sf adaptations are not necessarily the most faithful adaptations. BLADE RUNNER takes plenty of liberties with the original novel, but it's still a great film.

Oh, there's no doubt that there have been some great adaptations that take the original source material and rip it to shreds. Of course, there have been plenty of terrible adaptations that do the same thing.

On the subject of adaptations with a great deal of fidelity to the original work, A Scanner Darkly would certainly belong on the list. And I thought that was a great science fiction movie.

I read Contact. I think the movie is better, because I am more of a visual kind of guy. But the book is good too...the movie is one of my favorites. It comes off believable...

Spielberg is a master. Thus, Jurassic Park rocks! I'm also a big fan of The Lost World. It has way more style than the 1st one, although the San Diego ending is kinda silly.

David Lynch's Dune is a lot of fun and has style up the ying-yang. Plus, you've got Sting bellowing at the top of his lungs, "I WILL KILL HIM!"
