My review for Pandorum is now online at http://www.scifi4me.com -

And I went to see Toy Story/Toy Story 2 in 3D today at the Alamo Drafthouse - South. The 3D effects weren't as good as recent animated flicks, doen with 3D in mind, but there was a new trailer for Toy Story 3, free t-shirts, and a ten-minute intermission with comedic Toy Story stuff to entertain the audience.

Up next will be free advanced screenings of Whip It (Tuesday) and The Boys are Back (Wednesday).

How do you get invited to all those free screenings?

Mentioned it up thread already, but there are multiple sources for free movie passes here in Austin. AICN & the Drafthouse have contests from time to time to get into special events. And Jason Hunt, of SciFi4Me is workin' on gettin' me added to "press lists" for events, since I write reviews for his website.

Paid to see The Horse Boy yesterday. I've seen it before, since my best friend (and ex-roommate) edited the movie. Still, a very cool documentary that everyone should go see, because it was edited by my best friend (and ex-roommate)!

http://www.horseboymovie.com

Will add it to the list later.

I've also got three free screenings this week, startin' tomorrow! I'll be seein' Whip It (Tuesday), The Boys are Back (Wednesday) and Zombieland (Thursday).

And i'm definitely buying Star Trek in November and I've pre-ordered Red Roses and Petrol which comes out on Oct 13th. It has Greg Ellis in it aka Chief Engineer Olson from JJ Abrams Star Trek. Oh and I can't wait to see THIS IS IT in theaters in OCT!!! RIP MJ

Went to see Whip It tonight, and I liked it quite a bit, and so did my friend that saw it with me. After it was over, she was all excited about goin' to see roller derby.

Got a free minposter and keychain, handed out by real roller derby girls before the movie.

I'll add it to the list later.

Tomorrow night, free screenin' of The Boys are Back!

Wow. How do you guys remember all the films you've seen this year?

I don't usually, but IMDB does. I just went through my list there and put down the ones I thought I saw this year from my own memory. I'd say it's mostly accurate, give or take.

I went to go see The Boys are Back with my buddy Ron.

The movie depressed the hell out of me.

I'll add it to the list later.

Tomorrow night, ZOMBIELAND!

I got into a free advance screenin' of Zombieland tonight.

I thought it was pretty funny, especially Woody Harrelson & the celebrity cameo. My buddy Kevin says that Shaun of the Dead was better, though. I haven't seen it, so I couldn't say...

Also, got to see the new trailer for 2012.

That makes seven moves in eight days!

Saw American Psycho for the first time tonight. I went to Kick Butt for Batman (1989), but turns out, that's next week...whoops.

I'll add it to the list later.

The Thing [B-]
Sunshine [C] - I kind of halfway watched this about two years ago, but got bored. I thought I'd give it another show and give it my full attention... but... apart from some exciting visuals, there is absolutely no character development.

Sin Nombre - terrific!
Reservoir Dogs - well worth watching; earns its rep for over the top violence
Blue Velvet - one of the more coherent Lynch efforts...not sure I liked it, exactly, tho...
Sunrise - classic FW Murau silent movie, but I just couldn't get into it; the style is far too melodramatic and badly dated

Wow... it's coming out that soon... I thought that it would be coming out in December. I'd love to get that movie as well (Star Trek). It was one of the best movies that I've seen so far this year.

I saw two movies recently that were pretty good. Frost/Nixon and Capitalism: A Love Story (see this one... it's worth seeing -- heck it scared the hell out of me, seeing what those foreclosure people and all that are up to with people's money and stuff...).

Now onto the reviews...

Frost/Nixon -- Good acting by both Sheen and Langella. Before watching the movie -- I didn't know that David Frost didn't do that much preparation for the interview. And that it was the people that he worked with, who did a lot of the work before hand. He was a self-promoter in a lot of ways... getting ahold of the contacts and such. It took Richard Nixon getting ahold of him personally -- in the middle of the night -- for him to finally get up and do some real research himself (at least in the film -- which was probably dramatized for effect).

The last day of the interview is when he finally put Nixon on the ropes, so to speak. He (Nixon) was forced to admit his own wrong doing and all that. In the end, this movie is worth the watch -- both as a historical look at the events and as a look at how the actors portrayed these two men.

I give it a score of 8/10 [B+]

Capitalism: A Love Story -- A good movie that shows just what capitalism really is (at least nowadays). One big scam. Go see it -- it's worth the watch. Put aside your own views and take what you need and leave the rest.

There is some humor amongst the film's more serious issues at hand... and from what I could tell (I went to the premiere with a friend), most people liked it. Heck they even cheered during parts, booed during other parts and clapped during parts as well. It's a really involving piece.

I give it a score of 9/10 [A-]

As for Star Trek -- it was a real joy to see. Such nostalgia yet such fun. [A+]

The X-Files: I Want To Believe (director's cut) -- I saw this one again over at a friend's house (saw it at a local theater last year). And I liked it better than I did before. Sure it's not perfect, but it's decent enough. I've seen worse movies. [B+]

Yep, that scene didn't happen in real life. I recall reading there being other fabrications in the film to make it more dramatic - off the top of my head, Frost's female interest in the film didn't exist.

But yeah, that was a very good film. Langella was wonderful as Richard Nixon.
