SGU....

The only reason I'm bothering to tune in every week for SGU is because this show is set in space although there isn't much to choose from lately for space shows. SGU is like nuBSG without the decent actors and compelling music and the only advantage I see is that there won't be any pretentiousness on the part of fans insisting it is the greatest at everything ever (see nuBSG). I also find it amusing that people dislike it based on the fact it isn't very original when just about everything is a rip off or was derived from something else.

For Stargate, it is original. When compared to other SCIFI, of course it isn't.

Hmm, except that last time they needed one of those base stations in order for it to work between galaxies.

The magic communication rocks had me thinking shark jump too, those need to be gone.

Those were introduced on SG-1. They can be a bit....convenient, but at least it's continuity.

The interesting question for me is----where are they in relation to the Orii galaxy? We know that was significantly farther than Pegasus, far enough that even the Ancients figured a black-hole-powered supergate was a better idea than making the trip in hyperspace. And they can keep up with the Asgard hyperdrives.

I'm not so sure they can keep up with the Asgard hyperdrives, considering Destiny is billions of light years from Earth. Possibly hundreds of galaxies away.

I think that is perhaps what the device was that he also pulled out with the stone, the plate device that was lit up, Dr. Lee also had one on his end, the stone was sitting on top of it. Maybe they figured a way to back engineer some of the technology or something.

I don't remember seeing those rock communication devices on SG-1, but I did get the impression that they were used before.

They were first shown in the episode "Citizen Joe" when Joe (Dan Castellaneta) was seeing everything from Jack's mind about happenings at the SGC all those years.

We saw it again at the beginning of Season 9 when Vala and Daniel swapped bodies with those people from the Ori galaxy, which kick started the whole Ori storyline.

They are very established.

Like others have said, it basically felt like a lame rehash of the first episode of Stargate: Atlantis remade BSGish.

Let's see, angry black military guy who's crazy? Check.
Commanding officer who gets badly wounded? Check.
Annoying supergenius civilian? Check.
Tossed to some remote location with the help of a new chevron and super power supply? Check.
Stranded? Check.
Destination in need of repair? Check.
Suspension of disbelief stretched by destination having existed for hundreds of thousands if not millions of years but only recently starting to degrade? Check.
Trumped up threat to the SG team that will kill them in a matter of hours if they don't solve it despite, again, the destination having existed for hundreds of thousands if not millions of years? Check.

The only thing missing was the second-in-command being an smarmy asshole and the commander being the one to actually die (instead he was replaced by a politician -- ooh, edgy and creative!!!).

Doubt I'll watch another episode (or series) until they hire a whole new creative team and writers.

Green rocks were well established in Smallville, but that doesn't change the fact that they are garbage from a storytelling standpoint. One of the big hooks is far away and all alone...well all alone except for these AT&T rocks we can pull out and call Earth with.

I'm not arguing for or against their use in SGU, just that at least it is continuity. Too early to tell how much of a cruch that will be for them.

I admit I fell asleep after the first 45 minutes or so. Isn't it almost the same premise as Voyager, just with Stargates thrown in for good measure?

...which is just like Atlantis, which is just like Lost in Space...

yeah, it isn't an original SCIFI plot by any means, but that doesn't mean the plot is a bad one, as long as the stories are good

Let's see: Dull, gray sets, washed-out colors, jittery camerawork, awkward editing, arbitrary zooming in and out, inability to keep focus, forced conflict, adults who behave like disturbed adolescents, uninteresting characters and bland actors. nuBSG is back!

I wish this fad would end, already. Lame and amateurish does not equal cool and edgy. The SG-1 actors looked almost embarrassed to be there, especially RDA.

There was also a bit of a Lost vibe to it, given it was a bunch of civilians suddenly thrust into chaos (and the flashbacks); but it lacked the instantly compelling characters and distinctive actors.

It's really a shame to see the SG franchise infected with this tragically hip film school vibe. With Star Trek already gone, that leaves no new Space Opera at all.....

But the difference is that this was darker and edgier, whereas nuBSG was a steaming pile of horseshit with too much drums, bad camera flare, and characters you just wished would plow into the sun.

Well, good Darker & Edgier is better than bad Darker & Edgier, that's for sure-- it worked for Firefly and it works for Lost-- but it remains to be seen if this is good or not. And I'm sick of D&E in any case. But I'll certainly give it a fair chance (I even gave nuBSG a year or so), and hope that this is just some gimmicky series premiere stuff and that they'll settle in to some actual storytelling before long.

But they've really got to hire some professional cameramen; I do not want to be tuning in to Cops every week. :rommie:
