The only part about it I don't like is I don't care for how K-9's flying/levitating is handled (but considering the logistical problems faced in Doctor Who with having him rolling on the ground, it makes sense).
Having Leeson back as the voice makes it work. Sounds like they've hired a Murray Gold clone to do the music, which is a plus, as well. It looks like it's going to have some pretty good action, and with more than double the episodes of SJA (though roughly the equivalent screen time of DW) they should have more time to develop the stories.
The bias against SJA by some people is yet another aspect of modern Who fandom that continues to puzzle and frankly annoy me. I watched the first season expecting a kiddy show, but it was a lot more mature and well written than I expected, with one episode that was actually necessary for understanding Turn Left in the main series. I haven't seen Season 2 yet but it's got the Brigadier and Sonatrans, for pete's sake. And the third season sounds good as well. Is it as fantastic as DW or as edgy as Torchwood? Of course it isn't because it isn't aimed for that core audience. But it's still got the same quality, and as far a I'm concerned -- to steal a comment made by Katy Perry after Tyler Swift's VMA speech got hijacked -- dissing Sarah Jane and Elisabeth Sladen is like stomping on a kitten!
Folks who are refusing to watch SJA because of second-hand knowledge should put aside their prejudice and give that show a chance. And I think the same should hold true for K-9. Since it's not a BBC Wales production, and doesn't involve either Davies or Moffat, it's a crapshoot as to whether it'll be good or not (though if we want to get into the bias against those two writers that could actually be a plus for some people). But I'm willing to give it a chance.
Spoiler code for some reason is no longer working for me, so I have to discuss a bit of backstory spoiler for the K-9 series. Stop reading now if you don't want to know.
I was skeptical about this whole redesign of K-9 until I found out the first episode clears up any continuity issues in this area. Once I heard that, and once I heard Leeson was coming back, I had no problems. Hopefully the writers will be canny enough to not contradict some of the recent earth-shaking events (literally) in DW and TW, but I see they're now saying it takes place "in the near future" so that might solve that problem.
