My MacBook won't turn on

On PC laptops, there's a key combination (Fn+F10) that cycles the video output between Screen Only, VGA Only, and Both; is there a similar feature of the MacBook that you might have switched to VGA Only?

He already said that upon rebooting the computer, there are no signs of hardware activity -- the optical drive isn't spinning up, the hard drive isn't spinning up, the fans aren't activating.

Seriously... If it's under warranty take it back and have the Experts look at it.
And if they find laminar deposits of dried beer and putrefied vomit on the motherboard...?

Right. Whether the computer is under the initial one-year warranty or the extended AppleCare warranty, Apple will not do warranty repairs on damage caused through liquid or anything else beyond "normal wear and tear." Apple has sensors, not unlike the sensor inside a cell phone's battery compartment that turns red when it's contacted liquid, located in every imaginable cavity of its computers.

Honestly, RoJo, it does sound like you've caused damage to the logic board (and, I hate to say it, possibly by spilling something on it during your drinking episode), and that is a very expensive repair -- in the $800 range going direct through Apple, or somewhat cheaper by purchasing the part directly and installing it yourself ... which would itself void your remaining Apple warranty (and, I believe, disqualify you from extended AppleCare coverage).

Yeah, and since I won't be able to get to an Apple store until sometime next week, I will simply have to deal with this crappy old computer.

I had something similar happen with my MacBook Pro a couple months ago. It turns out my model has a known problem with the graphics card, where it can very occasionally malfunction and short out the logic board. It had to be sent back to the factory and everything to get all the actual "computing" parts of its innards replaced.

That's probably not your problem, though, since I could hear the hard drive spin up when I pushed the power button. That's all that happened, though. And IIRC, MacBooks don't have discrete graphics cards (though I feel like that might've changed within the last couple of model revisions).

- Remove the hard drive
- Find a power cable to power it
- While it's running, give the drive an almighty trust in one lateral direction (IE try and manually force the drive to spin).

Might be a bearing issue.

I think Mac has spoiled me. I am blown away by the crappiness of my old computer. I had it unplugged for about 15 minutes, and the battery was already down to 59%. Ridiculous.

So he did. My eyes had glazed over by that point in the Thread, I guess. :rommie:

Yeah, it's under warranty. It's only about 5 months old. I just wish I knew what happened to it.

Install CCTV in your next apartment, for those late night alcohol-fuelled destructive episodes... ;)

...I'm sure there's an app for that.

 nice one.

Don't do this. It's a great way of causing a head crash if the drive is good.

That has more to do with the crappiness of Li-ion technology than with anything else.

^ Yep. My Acer Aspire One runs about 5 hours on one charge. I love it. :adore:

All right, one positive thing about moving this weekend is that my new place is 20 minutes away from the Apple Store.

I dropped my MacBook off yesterday to have it looked at. They called me back today and said that they need to replace the logic board.

The good news: the warranty covers it, so it's not gonna cost me anything.
The bad news: they have to order the part, so I won't be able to get it back until next week.

At least you'll get it replaced at no cost. Logic boards aren't cheap.

Ugh! They replaced the logic board, and it still wouldn't turn on. Now they have to ship it off somewhere and have the whole keyboard replaced. It's still covered under my warranty, but it means I have to go Mac-less for another week!

If it's any consolation, my brother's used Macs for several years and the only major issues he's had is having to replace the logic board on more than one. AFAIK, it wasn't due to any accidents on his end. But I'm glad yours is under warranty.

Indeed. I'm very happy that my warranty covers drunken blackouts.

I just want to know what happened to it in the first place. I have a feeling I dropped it.

Long story short: I got really drunk last night for he first time in a long time. I actually blacked out.

When I woke up this morning, my MacBook was unplugged and turned off. It's been charging all day, but it won't turn on! The little light on the charger is green, so I know the battery is full, but the damn thing isn't doing anything!

I don't know if I dropped it or if I spilled something on it or what, but it's really bothering me.

Right now I'm using my crappy old computer. It takes 20 minutes just to boot up.

Uhm.
Push the power button.
