I suggest reading Diane Duane's excellent The Romulan Way, which is now collected in the omnibus The Bloodwing Voyages.The time of Surak, and his emerging discipline of logic. This should also explain how the anti-Surak faction left Vulcan and became the Romulans. This has been hinted at now and then in various novels, but to my knowledge there has not been an entire novel dealing with it.
Also the Vulcan's Soul trilogy told this story pretty in depth, didn't it?
