Good Things About Season 3?

Mariette Hartley in a leather bikini in All Our Yesterdays.

(I was going to mention how great The Tholian Web is, but others have beaten me to it. :p)

seigezunt: Funny, I hate hate HATE this episode. I find Kirk's actions in it completely bizarre and out of character. But I agree with comments above about some of the other fine episodes.

I fail to see why Kirk can't be given a pass here. After all, Rayna was designed (after repeated failed efforts) by Flint, who was not only a creative genius but had personally witnessed a wider variety of female appeal than anyone who ever lived, had therefore developed the most discriminating taste in women imaginable, and finally succeeded in distilling it all into one female who would be an ideal companion for himself. All we need do is to assume that Kirk would have been attracted to Rayna's physical type (or outer shell, if you will) to believe that of course Kirk would be besotted by her.

PS: My older daughter is named Rayna, a nice Yiddish name, to honor her late grandmother whose name was in turn derived from Rochel-Leah. No, she doesn't think we named her for a TV android played by Louise Sorel. I was gratified, though, to see that the remastered version of this episode now spells Sorel's end credit as Rayna instead of the original "Reena" (which disagrees with the signs such as "Rayna 16" seen at the end of the third act).

I actually dislike much of the music in the third season. I agree that the friendship between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy deepened in Season 3, in particular in such eps as The Tholian Web and Requiem for Methusaleh, even in For the World Is Hollow And I Have Touched the Sky. But the stinkers in this season are worse than the stinkers in Seasons 1 and 2. Still, on balance, Season 3 is better than a lot of television then and since. -- RR

It's not that he falls for her. It's that he so ridiculously falls for her, and seems to overlook that people are dying of this disease they need the drug for.

Good things about Season 3?

Some great new shots of the Enterprise (I think they first showed up in Season 3).

The western town set in "Spectre of the Gun."

"He spoke to the spirit...and did call it 'Bones'!"

Non-shrinking uniforms.

The Melkot!

;)

Please consolidate your postings (edit function) and don't triple-post. Thanks!

Is this a big deal? Where did I triple post?

See the first page of this thread. Yeah, you did triple post.

It's not "a big deal," but no, you're not supposed to do it, at least not very often. Two posts in a row is OK, three is not. More than three is definitely not. ;) It just gets too spammy-looking, you know?

You can edit a post if you think of something you want to add afterwards. I'm not sure if you can do this when you're new, though - I can't remember.

But no, it's not a BIG deal. If it were a big deal, T'Bonz would have said so.

Good to see that there are at least two other people who love "Is There In Truth No Beauty?" as I do. It's my one of my favorite TOS episodes - very unusual story, with an especially unusual alien and a no less unique human guest character.

Other strong episodes are "The Tholian Web", "All Our Yesterdays", "The Empath" and "The Enterprise Incident". "Day of the Dove" is also quite good, "Requiem for Methusaleh" had its moments but also some weaknesses. All in all, a few episodes are terrible, a few are OK, and a few are excellent.

Does "Good things about season 3" simply mean folks should list good episodes from season 3?

That's pretty weak.

I took it to mean 'what changes in the series that happened in season 3 were good?"

I like that the klingons got a nice new ship.
I like the uniforms
I like....

I like.....

Well there were a few good episodes in season 3.

And by the way, there were NO NEW shots of the enterprise in season 3---none!
After season two all the shots were reused.

Somebody tell what shots were new if I'm wrong!!

Klingons were not bad guys for once (in "Day of the Dove"). There, that's a good thing about season 3.

Aw crap! Does this mean I have to turn in my Trekkie badge?

Good things about Season 3 (in my HUMBLE opinion) in no particular order:

1. The Klingon Ship
2. The musical scores
3. Elaan of Troyius
4. The Enterprise Incident
5. The Tholian Web
6. Spock's Brain
7. For The World Is Hollow and I Have Touched The Sky
8. The inter-character relationships
9. Marj Dusay as Kara
10. Day of The Dove
11. All the new visual effects for Season 3
12. Michael Ansara as Kang
13. Joanne Linville as the Romulan Commander
14. The Imorg spaceship
15. The SS Aurora
16. The Tholian ships

My two favorite episodes in the third season are "Requieum For Methusalah" and "Turnabout Intruder." At the bottom of the barrel, in my opinion, are "And The Children Shall Lead," "That Which Survives," "Spock's Brain," "The Mark of Gideon," "Plato's Stepchildren" and "The Way to Eden." The third season frequently descended into Irwin Allen territory, with absurd plots accompanied by poorly-written dialogue (e.g. "The Savage Curtain"). Much of the season was just plain dull, with "The Cloud Minders" being a particularly lackluster episode that comes to mind.

I know that, over the years, every time I have decided to give the third season another chance, nearly every episode I have re-watched has only reminded me of why I initially found the season so disappointing.

Agreed!! They showed the klingons as something other than 'black hats' in that episode--one of my five favorites from season 3.

Mentioning the Klingons in "Day of the Dove" brings up another cool thing established in Season Three that I don't think has been mentioned: we got to see both Klingon transporters and a female Klingon in that episode.

Introducing Surak was pretty cool, too--had he been mentioned at all prior to "The Savage Curtain"? I can't remember....

watched "Spock's Brain" again today. I think its badness is way overstated. There are far worse episodes IMHO.
