Star Trek: Nero Comics (Spoilers?, New Info?)

Yeah I'm kinda wondering WHY the fark Paramount didn't make sure these comics were out BEFORE the fruckin' movie.

While I agree these would have been nice if they were out before the film, the fact is that the Countdown comics were already coming out on the heels of the film. Not to mention since the film wasn't out, it wouldn't made since to go from Nero & Spock going through a wormhole to suddenly Nero going to prison.

^^ Nero wanted to put Robau in the wast recycling thingy, but then Klingons attacked before they could.
I guess the Klingons have the body now...

He is now the Empire's new ceremonial Emperor and figurehead.

Emperor B'Adass.
Let's keep this thread about the comic, and not have it become Yet Another cooleddie Spam Thread™, 'K? You've been threatening to monopolize a couple of the regular spam threads, as it is.

Edit:

Here's a link to TrekMovie's preview of ST: Nero #2.

:(

AHEM. It wasn't going to become a "spam thread."

Just a Robau joke. No harm. I don't really "monopolize" other threads, either. But that's neither here nor there. Back to the comic discussion!:techman:

There seemed to be an implication that The Narada is alive.

Sharr

Well, the COUNTDOWN backstory explains that the Narada was modified with Borg technology that self-replicates and grows appendages and tools onto the ship to make it more formidable, explaining why the ship's so gigantic by the time it gets sucked back to the 23rd century. This never became part of the actual film itself, but makes total sense if you accept the comics as semi-canonical or even wholly canonical backstory.

"Countdown" did come out before the movie. The only reason there is now a "Nero" mini-series and a "Spock Reflections" mini-series is that "Countdown" sold so well.

But tie-ins are read only by about 1% of the viewing audience of a movie, so even though IDW is exploring the missing Nero subplot now, it wasn't essential information that had to be read to enjoy the movie.

Nero is just as clueless as anyone else as to why the Narada is doing what it's doing.

The mining ship was upgraded with Borg technology in "Countdown". Borg ships can repair themselves.

That doesn't explain why it started attacking the Klingons and kicking ass after 20 years sitting still.

- Ayel speaks for Nero because they developed telepathic powers during their prison time due to drugs.

Ayel was speaking for Nero before they even went to Prison though. "I will speak for Captain Nero."

Yeah you're right actually.

That doesn't explain why it started attacking the Klingons and kicking ass after 20 years sitting still.

There's two issues to go, but it seems to me that, as Nero developed his mental skills, he was able to start communicating with the Borg personality aspect of the ship itself. As yet, he isn't even sure how he did it.

Nero says, "The Narada comes to my rescue. But who woke her?"

He senses that the ship won't fire on them, but "She's waiting for us. She's waiting for me."

Yeah, Ayel was Nero's mouthpiece dating back to the COUNTDOWN comics...around the time Romulus was destroyed and Nero started to lose his control, decency and faculties.

I think it would've been nice for them to have introduced some Borg nano-tech in Countdown to their bodies to explain their skin as well, better than drugs.

Skin? You mean their tattoos?

Yeah, their tattoos were made after Romulus was obliterated. According to the comics, its an ancient Romulan tradition to denote mourning and grief.
Not sure how Borg nano-tech is going to explain tattoos, though.

^
True. Look at the Reman deformations passed down through the generations. Dilithium ore radioactivity and toxic byproducts of centuries of mining left Remans pale as a marshmallow and hideous in appearance.

In bright light such as when Ayel went aboard the Jellyfish to extract the Red Matter they looked more like TNG or classic Romulans. Pale, greenish-hued skin. The correct skin hue.

I really like that it expands on Nero, the fact him and the ship have a connection brings his death scene in the film a new dimension.

Seriously. At this point, I like Nero and his Romulans more than I care for the nuCrew.
There's just something about a frothing mad fanatic who spends his time brooding silently in the dark, tortured by personal loss, that really, really speaks to me these days.
Kind of digging the comic, I am indeed.

I wonder if Eric Bana has been exposed to the comics? They help flesh out his villain a lot more than the film seemed to. Bana strikes me as an actor who might dig comics and other traditional nerdy things since he's been in franchises like TREK and THE HULK and attends Comic-Cons.
