Fox execs, not the X-creatives: the real origin of XMO: Wolverine?

From IGN Movies: according to X-producer Lauren Shuler Donner, "the much-loved Wolverine-in-Japan storyline... was originally meant to be the plot of the first film until studio Fox asked for an origin story instead.

'Well, they had a reason for that,' Donner explained. 'They wanted to make sure that we weren't just taking for granted that people saw the X-Men trilogy, we didn't take for granted that people were coming into the movie and knew who Wolverine was. And they felt that they needed to lay that basement, that framework, by doing this movie.'"

...

X-Men hints at Wolvie's origins. $296m revenue.

X2 explains where Wolvie got his claws, and where he lost his memory. $400m+ revenue.

X3 features Wolvie, in case people had forgotten who he was. $460m revenue.

But apparently Fox thinks we're all amnesiac imbeciles, and have to take a Wolvie 101 crapfest before we get to see the movie we wanted in the first place.

Either that, or they figured they might not get a second (fifth) Jackman Wolverine after the Japan storyline, and those in the know are hiding behind this excuse to sock fans for all they're worth. Which might have been excusable if XMO:W weren't terrible.

Pathetic.

... and That's Entertainment! :rommie:

Let's hope the Japan storyline will be better.

It won't - the only example of a series like this that took an upturn in quality is Terminator, where IMHO Salvation is quite a bit better than T3, however this is a bit debatable and nothing stellar.

This year's Wolverine was tired and had that amazing trick expensive movies have now of making fight scenes tedious several times. The next one will be just as resolutely average.

It's always something with you X-Men fans. Did Batman fans bitch as much about Batman Begins?

Yes Batman fans bitch about Batman Begins...as great as it is...it's not perfect. I've complained many times about stuff I would have changed in the movie. Also no one likes Christian Bale's Batman voice.

"WHERF AREF THEYF?!"

"What? I can't understand a word you're saying?"

"WHEREF AREGRF THEYGF?!!"

"I STILL can't understand you! Try to speak more clearly."

POW!!

"WHARAGE AREFGH THEYAFG!"

"I STILL CAN'T UNDERSTAND YOU!"

Yeah Bale's Batman voice sucked. LOL okay back on topic..

I guess what really hurt XMO:W was that they just pulled all kinds of ideas out of their ass. Like Emma Frost wasn't there in Weapon X, and Gambit... he's not that old, so you're telling me that Gambit is older than the White Queen? And what's what Baraka-Pool? If they had just followed the original Origins of Weapon X storyline from the Wolverine Comics they would have had enough to work with.

Oh well... Fox sucks. Here's hoping rights go back to Marvel soon enough!

Wolverine 2 better have a 17 minute recap of Wolverine's backstory otherwise I might forget who Wolverine is. Wait, is Wolverine the one with the blue hair, good at acrobatics?

Just making an origin movie isn't in itself a huge imposition. The comics Weapon X stories provide plenty of good material. The problem was the plodding story structure and the insistence on including a million random cameos.

No, because they were greatful for a somewhat faithful adaptation. But for The Burton Movies? Oh, you're damn right they did. And they have every right to do it too.

Not a Batman or BB fan myself, but at least the four movies before it didn't feature flashbacks that pretty much explained everything one needed to know about Bats' origins. Besides, some stories are just best left hinted at - see Calvin and Hobbes' "Noodle Incident".

Actually I like his Batman voice and have never had any problems understanding it aside from one line in early on in the Dark Knight when he's talking to the fake Batmans.

"I'm not wearing hockey pads" That one?

The next one is going to need more explosions and boobs.

From your lips to God's ears!

Exactly. David Benioff's original script was great. Dark, violent, gritty. Bring in Skip Woods, the auteur behind such classics as Swordfish and Hitman, and some likely studio interference and voilà. I want to have faith in the next one. Christopher McQuarrie is wickedly talented. But... it's hard to trust Fox. And Rothman. At all.

I wouldn't hinge my hopes on the Japan storyline being anything like the comics.

The comics have him a refined warrior with many martial arts skills.

The movies have him as a typical street brawler who hasn't ever seen a Dojo from inside.. given Origins it almost directly leads over to X-Men and leaves no time for him to be trained up (as evidenced in his fighting style during X-Men where he constantly gets owned by Mystique until he outwits her).

However i would really like to see progression.. have him train in martial arts and then use it. Show us the difference between snarling street brawler and experienced martial artist (who occasionally lets the inner beast out and goes on a rampage).

We already knew some of the essential facts about Batman's origins from the flashbacks in the middle of Batman (1989). However, Batman Begins went far more in depth than any of the previous Batman movies had in terms of explaining the emotional origins of the character. Lots of people's parents get murdered but only one made the leap from grieving orphan to bat-costumed superhero. Batman Begins attempted to explain Batman in rational, real world terms. Tim Burton's theory of the character was that anyone who dressed up like a bat to fight crime had to be at least a little crazy. The 2 movies are good companion pieces to each other. Batman (1989) is about the legend of Batman. Batman Begins is about Bruce Wayne, the man.

Yep. They really should of re-recorded that line, even after watching it again on DVD I didn't know what exactly he said.
