underated SCIFI movies

American Godzilla.

Peter Jackson's King Kong.

Spielberg's War of the Worlds.

I am unanimous in my love of them.

Explorers; Not so much underrated as (so far as I can tell) unknown or overlooked. Seriously, sometimes I think I'm the only person that's ever seen this movie!

Oh and another vote for Bicentennial Man. Beats the crap out of AI.

Starship Troopers 3- Just watched this last night and seriously people it is not bad. It has everything you want from a type of movie like this: action, boobies, Joleen Blalock, blood and guts. I was not bored once during the entire movie.

I like a lot of the movies listed here.

For me, it's Waterworld. I thought it was great.

I forgot about Waterworld. The inaccurate science aside, it's a damn fun movie.

As for The Bicentennial Man, I much preferred the original short story, but I think I need to check out the movie again.

The Bicentennial Man, I agree

Waterworld, I agree

Chronicle's Of Riddick, I agree

Adding

Underworld (2003)
Starship Troopers (1997)
It was campy and fun, and it had

Denise Richards when she was younger and just starting out.

In what way is 'Starship Troopers' underrated? As I recall it did rather well at the box office and while there are a few people who don't particularly like it, I'd hardly call it underrated.

I'm afraid I can't agree with 'Chronicle's Of Riddick', twice it's put me to sleep, which in an achievement in itself since I usually have a hight tolerance for long films but for an action/adventure sci-fi film, this is not something I'd expect if it was a "good" film.
It may be garnering a bot of a cult following, like say 'Buckaroo Banzai', but that's really not the same thing.

Starship Troopers, which I liked, seems to be hated by those, or at least a majority of those I think, who read the book....my friend WILL NOT watch it ever again...

This movie has really grown on me over the years. When I first saw it as a kid I wasn't really into the second half with the aliens, but now, I don't know, I find it kind of fun as to what they turn out to be. It's also kind of nice to see River Phoenix play a nerdy type character. He's almost unrecognizable.

Well you're always going to get opinionated die-hards when you adapt anything into a film. They're in the minority, so in a more general sense, I'd say the film is reasonably well rated.
For the record, I've read the book and liked the film just fine. I guess I just got the joke.
Sure, it would have been nice to have seen a proper power armoured raid on the skinnies, but at the time it just wouldn't have been feasible for a live action movie.

It's also fun to play "spot the future star trek actors". ;)

"Bicentennial Man" always seems to get panned but I love it.

Seconded! I think it gets dissed because it is a very character-driven sci-fi film, rather than an action-driven one. It's actually reasonably faithful to the original material, and Robin Williams is understated just enough, after his initial 'introduction' to the family and especially to 'Little Miss.'

Demolition Man - a witty script, great performances from Snipes, Bullock and yes, even Stallone. But no love from most fans and not even a sequel? Why?!

I'm with you on this one. It's one of my favourites and whenever I come across it while channel surfing I stop to watch it.

-- The Prestige (though I suppose it's more steampunk, than sci-fi). Great movie, but most people I know can't stand it. I really like the way it approaches the concept of "Who we really are" and "What makes a person a person"

-- Star Trek Insurrection. I know a lot of fans don't like it, but I think it's the most TNG of the TNG movies. It felt like a two hour episode of the series, which is both good and bad, but it was a good TNG movie.
I totally agree with your take on Insurrection. I remember having a conversation / argument with a buddy of mine, when it came out, over just what you stated. I think that is one of the reasons it wasn't received as well, because it felt too much like a long two parter.

I too am very fond of Prestige. Very funny you brought that movie up, considering I just bought it yesterday night. I remember the theater being pretty full when i saw it but, aside from that, really don't remember hearing too much about it. I thought it was a very interesting movie.

Very happy to see the love for "12 Monkeys" in this thread, after all the mentions in the 'overrated' thread. I'm surprised someone has criticized Pitt's performance. I thought it was delightfully unique and totally deserved its Oscar nomination, but even though it was the more overtly comedic one, Bruce Willis' performance is the one that makes me laugh more. I just love how 'out of it' he is when he's in the past and how he's ranting and raving the truth, but everyone just thinks he's a delusional maniac (understandably).

I think "Starman" is not hated, but just way underrated. People always talk about "The Thing" and "Escape from New York" being John Carpenter's best sci-fi movies, but I think it's better than both. It's sweet, fun, and I think very realistic in its depiction of how an alien might make contact with earth and interact with its surroundings and people. Also, an amazing performance by Jeff Bridges and probably the best thing Karen Allen has done outside of Indiana Jones.

12 Monkeys - I think this movie may be too weird to have gained a wider appreciation
The Jacket - is Adrien Brody really crazy or is he actually time traveling from 1992 to 2007 while locked in a straight jacket in a morgue drawer? Keira Knightly tries an American accent :D
Primer - the most realistic depiction of time travel that I've seen
Brazil - you'll have the song stuck in your head :D

I also agree about Waterworld. I know I'll get hate about this, but I really loved The Fifth Element. It was silly and funny, but you have to Tiny Lister as President of the planet.
