Counterpoint Solution...

2 of 10

Captain
In the ep "Counterpoint" instead of going through all the problems and medical issues that Voyager was having to deal with keeping the telepaths from being captured while going through Devore space. Would a better solution have been just putting the telepaths into stasis while in Devore space and once out of their territory bring them out.

Why wouldn't the Devore suspect them of letting the telepaths out of stasis as soon as the inspection ended?

For all we know the Devore could detect telepathic abilities even thought the people were in stasis.

In fact I think that the Devore who went over Voyager's records so completely that Janeway had to account for all the members past and present of her crew (she had false death records for the Vulcans and Betazoids) probably would have known the people in stasis were telepaths.

I thought it was fitting though that she showed their deaths as a shuttle craft accident.

But put them in stasis WHERE? You can't just hide a bunch of people in stasis tubes when you have the Devore searching every nook and cranny of the ship.

In retrospect, I think the OP was operating under the theory that a telepath in stasis couldn't be detected as having telepathic abilities. I suspect that's a flawed theory, though.

The point was not to hide them but to assure the Devore that they would pose no threat to them as Voyager travelled through their space.

I see what you're saying, I just don't think it would have made much difference.

The Denore come off as an ultra paranoid and extremely evil race. I just don't think they would settle for that.

They seemed to think the only good telepath was a dead or captured one.

Exactly, for the Devore it was a matter of institutionalized racial cleansing, and totalitarian control over their "terrortory", pure and simple.

Nothing short of death would have placated them.

I admit I was a bit suprised to see them let Voyager go at the end. Societies like that don't stand on law when it's an inconvenience.

I always thought the Devore knew about the telepaths. To me, the point was to get bigger fish than just a bunch of telepaths. Kashyk was hoping to discover the location of the wormhole and destroy it. That would truly have brought him glory and a promotion, probably. However, when all he managed to do was let the telepaths escape and also make a fool of himself, he wasn't about to bring that to anyone's attention. The best way to hide it was to pretend that Voyager never had telepaths and let them go. Destroying the ship or taking them into custody would have required an explanation. I think, too, that there was a game being played between Janeway and Kashyk; the honorable thing to do is to admit defeat and slink away. That's about all the honor Kashyk had, though. ;)

Being a telepath was against Devore law regardless of whether they were a threat or not. What threat would the children be? Yet the Devore treated them as criminals anyway.

Children grow up and make more children.

If you want to destroy your enemy completely, then you have to attack the breeding pairs or your enemies children will kill your children.

^ I have a bad feeling this thread will now derail, much like the AVP-R threads derail the moment someone mentions the alien using the Pregnant Women to grow more aliens...

Why is it that I am always being blamed for Train Tipping?

Impregnation aside, I do think that the crew should have at least dated some of the Aliens that bumped into... the lack of recreational mingling with outsiders this crew had bordered on frigidity and xenophobia.

It's insane to believe that Seven was still a virgin when she began dating Chuckles, considering 12 blokes, girls, inbetweeners and "other" probably hit on her ever week.
