Tread for the airing of grievances with the modding of this forum.

TerriO:

3 rules of leadership:

1) Never let em' see you sweat.
2) Never say you're sorry (unless you really were wrong).
3) Never let the inmates run the asylum.

You don't owe anybody an apology for how you moderate this forum (same goes for all the other mods of all the other forums). The vast majority of the membership of TrekBBS are on free accounts and frankly, should appreciate they have a place like this to spill their dribble (myself included).

This isn't a democracy, it's a benign dictatorship, and you and the other mods are free to run this place any way you see fit. If that means tomorrow you want to change everyone's custom rank to "Loser/wanker" you are completely within your right and you don't owe anyone an apology for doing so. And if someone doesn't like it, too bad. They can leave and go find another forum to post in.

I have a complaint. You closed my dermal regenerator thread for no good reason.
Erh ...

Odo's_Bucket, if you'd like to try the thread again, you're welcome to. I encourage it, actually.

Starting two threads that are the same is 'against the rules' isn't it?
Sounds like the mod suggested I 'break the rules' so that he can give me an infraction.

No good reason? It was degenerating into a virtual fistfight with you yelling at everyone. How's that not a good reason?

For the record, if I have never warned anyone encouraged to re-start a thread if they choose to re-start the thread, and you would not be warned for re-starting it, either. As long as you don't add anything warning-worthy (like, oh, saying something inflammatory toward the people who obviously irritated you in the closed thread), there would be no reason to warn you for re-starting the thread.

I'm not suggesting you break the rules. If I wanted to give you an infraction, I'd have nailed you for several of the angry near-flaming comebacks in the original thread. I even told you you were approaching a flaming infraction.

What I'm suggesting is everyone take a deep breath and reread their posts before they hit 'submit reply'. Posting while pissed off is never a good practice, just on principle.

The reason I lost my temper in the first thread is because of the 24 or so pm's I'd gotten from other users (not mods) griping me out for making the thread wrong. I didn't meant to make it wrong. I even explained that I cut and pasted it and it didn't work right. I got chewed out by a lot of users. I'm not going to name names though, cause I don't want others to get in trouble, and I've already deleted all those anyway. I tried to post something that I thought others would be interested in reading, it came out wrong and alot of people treated me like an idiot. So I responded in anger. And I honestly didn't know that posting three times, even if on subject or as an answer to someone's post was frowned upon.

I'm not going to try making the thread again though, just cause I don't want to cause problems. I messed up a thread in the voyager forum, couldn't figure out how to get the pictures I wanted to show to show up. So I changed the title to 'close this thread' and thought the mods would just close it. I got an infraction for that. Looks like I can't do anything right.

Truth is, I came here to make friends. I don't have any. Honestly, I've been something of a shut in since I came home from the war. I don't have anyone to talk to and thought I'd find that here. Guess I came looking in the wrong place.

I don't think I'll be coming back. Maybe to look around a little, but no to post.

First off, please don't expect the same treatment you'd get in other fora here. We run a bit differently out of necessity. We don't have some of the problems other fora have, for which I'm grateful, you guys. I think I've issued more infractions in the last 2 months than I have in the last 2 years.

I did not know about the PMs. I'm sorry you felt you were ganged up on. I understand the frustration, trust me, I have it regularly with a few posters, but ultimately, I try to treat this a forum for open and intelligent discussion of real science and real technology. I'd be very curious to have you discuss any scientific tech you encountered during your time in the war, at least, whatever you can legally discuss. You'd be one of our resident experts on that subject, if you chose.

Me? My subject tends to be Mars exploration. Occasionally, psychiatry. That's mostly due to four years in treatment for major depression and anxiety disorders. While I'm not a doctor, I learned a lot in those four years.

We have experts on just about any subject you can think of around here. And I'm grateful for all of their participation. This forum wouldn't exist without them. Thank you, guys.

Seriously, Odo's_Bucket, you're welcome to try the thread again, and if the crap coding comes up, just edit the post and delete the bad coding. As you see in the resulting post, it's not necessary to the formatting of the text. It's a glitch in the BBS software, and it's not doing it consistently, I'm afraid. It sometimes happens. Things sometimes go wrong with a post. Previewing your post before you hit submit is always a good idea, just on principle.

What may be a good idea? Cut and paste into a plain text editor first (e.g., Notepad on Windows, Textedit on Mac), so you can eliminate that crap coding from the get-go.

I hate to see anyone think they're not welcome here. Because you are. All points of view are welcome. I firmly believe we can't see all sides of a scientific issue unless we see all opinions on the scientific issue, and many here share that belief. We can all learn from each other. Because of the regulars and the subject matter we tend to have here, though, we tend to get a little more discriminating in how the information is presented. Wikipedia tends to get a little less respect than a peer reviewed journal article. We have a lot of actual scientists here, and that's just customary. I think we have a lot to learn from each other, both scientist and layperson.

I'm really sorry you've had problems in other fora on the BBS, but I want to do everything I can to help everyone be as comfortable as possible here. Please, give us another shot. :)

Re: Thread for the airing of grievances with the modding of this forum

Okay, it's been brought to my attention that some people have a problem with the way I've been modding the forum. However, since nobody seems to actually want to talk to me about it, I'm going to give you guys an open-season on me thread. I can't change a pattern of behavior that you guys consider a problem if I don't know about it, can I?

I'm setting down a few ground rules for the thread, but I hope you'll think they're pretty fair:

I won't warn anyone for taking a shot at me. I'm a big girl, I can take it. If you have a problem with me, here's a prime time to air it. If you think I'm "heavy-handed", please, tell me why. If you think I'm a bitch, feel free to say it. If you want me to explain a decision, just ask. Anything regarding me and the way I mod the place is fair in this thread and this thread ALONE.

However, this thread is only for airing grievances with me and the modding of this forum. If anyone starts flaming or trolling other posters here, or airing a grievance with me that does not relate to the modding of this forum, you will be warned, know that. I am only making this thread for "open season on me and the modding of Sci-Tech."

Now, I turn the microphone over to you guys.

I want to tell you something, and this isn't "brown nosing" please excuse the crude language but from what I see you do a great job here at these forums. Where I came from www.startrek.com, they have terrible moderators who refuse to ban anyone nor take down blatant hateful posts full of flaming, trolling, offensive remarks, and down-right bad comments. I have seen people get away with murder at that forum because CBS says that you if they did anything than everyone would be banned. They do delete some of the very offensive posts however that is rare and a lot goes unchecked. There are good people there however there are those there who are not courteous, not polite, rude, vulgar , offensive, mean, and cruel, why, because the moderators refuse to take action, people have gone to CBS.com asking for help, complaining about the terrible moderators inaction and lack of willingness to deal with those who break the rules, but so far nothing has been done. The moderators policy for dealing with these issues is to either do nothing or to tell you to ignore the flaming.

CBS fired the original startrek.com administrators over a year ago now and replaced them with people who just don't understand how to moderate a web forum. So please take it from someone who knows the people here are all great and for the most part they are respectful and that is because of the moderators here, you know what you are doing and care about the forums. Although I haven't seen the moderators quirks or mistakes here I see that you are ding your job. Please continue to do your best and keap up the good work. Live long and prosper:klingon:...

TerriO was reassigned by order of the admiralty on stardate 15062009. I am the new CO. I have experience with the Cardassians. Now get this damned goldfish out of my ready room. :p

Jadzia23, I wish you would help us stop the bullying over at Startrek.com and help the members over there get rid of the main bully starbase63. I cannot believe CBS has not banned him yet.

I'm glad this site does not allow the bullying and harassment of members here. You guys and gals do a great job!

That's an interesting take on things.

If you have a problem with the moderation, now's the time to do it instead of making thinly veiled remarks.

Tachyon, I do have a problem with people butting into every thread you make seemingly for the express purpose of poking fun at you, and I have no problem with most of your questions. This is something I've already commented on recently.

I do, however, have a problem when your questions are answered and you don't seem to like the actual on-topic responses you get. Sometimes you don't postulate a hypothetical in a valid manner to begin with, and you get noticeably upset when we try to correct you about an original assumption you made in error. It usually goes down hill from there.
