StarCraft II delayed

Jeez, how old is your computer? I think my 1.3 Ghz comp was purchased over 8 years ago. And it was a cheap model.

As mentioned, I'm not a 'gamer'. If sc2 requires an upgrade, eventually I'll probably get a newer pc. If it doesn't, so much the better.

How many times do you have to click Kerrigan before the Head-Six music starts playing?

Doesn't exactly fit in here, but:

Tricia Helfer is gonna voice Kerrigan.

Ugh, really?

I hate this new stupid trend in gaming. Cast "hot grrls" that nerds get boners over as opposed to a) the original voice actress or b) an actress who has experience with voice acting.

Minor characters - like the ones in Mass Effect - fine. They're throwaway parts. But central characters? Come on.

They removed Raynor's 'stache too!

I'm glad that at least one game developer still has the guts to delay a release even if it means alienating some fans, instead of releasing an unfinished and buggy game.

Blizzard has always done it that way, and it has payed off everytime.
All of Blizzards games are considered milestones in their respective genres.

Yep. Blizzard doesn't get credit because they didn't invent the genres they exploit--the RTS, MMORPG, and hack-and-slash genres were certainly around before. But they've done very well to bring those genres to new levels and really expand on them.

Inventing a new kind of game is a worthwhile pursuit and certainly deserving of praise. But so is working hard to perfect existing genres, too.

The Blizzard folks seem to work really hard to make good games, and are largely successful. I don't know why anyone would begrudge them that. It's not like they're run like Ion Storm was, taking years and years to make a game because all your employees are amateurs who'd rather play arcade games and take naps than actually work.

Blizzard's always been kind to Mac users, too. I remember playing Warcraft II on a couple of PowerMacs in our computer lab when I was in high school. Fun, fun stuff.

J.

Talken Campbell apparently fell out with Blizzard in february.

Maybe Blizzard unceremoniously dumped her because they wanted to hire a 'hot chick'.

Maybe Talken Campbell looked at the (admittedly large) StarCraft II pie, and asked for what she believed to be her fair share in the way we've come to expect from actors.

Short of both parties disclosing the details of their disagreement, we just don't know.

Maybe it's because she's using Sarah McKerrigan as her pen name for her romance novels.

Still, it's the type of shitty, cynical casting meant to get nerdgasms. I mean, she's in Halo ODST as well... and really, I can't see what they possibly gain by casting her other than the fact that they can pimp her out when they need to market the game. At least when she showed up in C&C3, they basically had her prance around during the live action scenes so that you could gawk at her if you want. I don't see any nerds fetishizing her voice though.

I mean, Christ... Halo ODST is basically a Firefly reunion, with Mal, Tudyk and Baldwin starring, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the acting will be any *good*.

I don't preclude the possibility that these actors might actually be good, but compared to "real" voice actors, I have to imagine that they'll just end up sounding like boring versions of themselves... like Ray Romano in that Ice Age movie and Jack Black in that Panda movie.

On the other hand, you're assuming that just because she's a "hot grrl" that she won't be able to do good voice acting. If she performs well then I couldn't give a toss what they do for marketing.

You're not seriously suggesting people wait to see the final product before passing judgment, are you? :vulcan:

Ack, my bad, forgot this was the interwebs for a second there.

Given that she's acted before, I could judge her acting based on past performances right?
She ain't exactly winning any Oscars any time soon.

Voice acting is as difficult as theatre acting, because you can't rely on director's tricks to make you look better than you are.

And even then, at least in theatre acting you can rely on your body to convey emotion and reaction. Voice actors have to do all that through timbre and exaggeration.

I look at it this way. BioWare had all these C-list celebs do Mass Effect because having Marina Sirtis or Seth Green come in for an hour to record five lines of dialog makes for good PR. You can't sell Jennifer Hale because no one knows who she is or appreciate what she does. But she's the best part of Mass Effect - She IS Commander Shepard. Yeah, Seth Green gets to be on the marketing that came on the DVD and that appeared on Xbox Live, but the key role is left to someone who is good enough that she can sound different in every single role that she performs - from Metal Gear Solid to Jedi Academy to Knights of the Old Republic to Mass Effect.

But beyond games, you look at the American cartoon space - E.G. Daily being in *everything* during the late 90s yet still being able to sound different regardless.

I guess the thing is, I'm one of those broken people who will suffer through bad games/extremely difficult gameplay for good story every time, so things like voice acting and writing/scripting are very important to me. Most gamers follow Ryan Payton or Corrine Yu, I follow Jennifer Hale. Oh well.

I really need to do a paragon female Shepard run-through someday, because right now, female Shepard is inexorably linked with the asshole that I played her as in my head. :D

Hah, that's another thing - she's able to play the same character two different ways. I did do a "Jack Bauer" run, but I always associate her with the Paragon Shepard. Figures.

You sure can! Feel free to start any time by looking at her past voice work.

Who most gamers follow tends to have very little to do with what actually goes on in development anyway.

That's one of the things that I loved about Mass Effect--with the way that the dialogue system was set up, I felt like I was doing more role-playing than in any other game, including (especially?) straight-up RPGs.

This is sad. I had been holding out for it so now I will have to find something else to play for a while. Blizzard is hilarious with these things, they always miss every date they set. The irony is they set that date far in advance. So to me I would think this means that they should have plenty of time to get the product finalized. Missing Christmas 09 also seems like a shot in the foot.
