Captain's ready roomm: too much Luxury!

^ You're basically talking about the "Wardroom"... at least that's what we call the Officer's Mess on a CG ship. The term can also be used as a general expression for the entire group of officers onboard.

On most CG cutters, the CO's Mess is a separate place -- he/she dines alone, unless you're invited to be there with him/her. It's also used for official Meet-and-Greets, NJP proceedings (aka 'the big green tablecloth'), etc.

On some of the newer ships with the reduced size of the crew, there's been a push to get rid of the CO's Mess and have him/her dine with the rest of the officers. Personally, I'm not a big fan of that -- the Wardroom is the XO's territory. I can see the benefits, don't get me wrong (one less messcook, etc.), but still... tradition wins IMO.

Cheers,

It's not just about the tradition, by the way... the staff works for the XO, after all, not the CO. He's "in charge" in the wardroom. The captain doesn't really get to "fraternize" with his subordinates.

Being in command really sucks in some ways, but it's definitely necessary to keep that level of "distance" between the guy making the big decisions and those underneath him.

No wonder Kirk kept taking every chance to hang out with the green chicks... it's not like he got to have much of a life aboard-ship!

There was a captain's mess on Enterprise-D, too, wasn't there? Think we saw it in Sins of the Father, when Picard and his officers dined with Kurn. I don't recall Janeway having that. -- RR
That was the conference room behind the bridge, or if a set redress had the same decorations opposite the windows. Captain Archer did have a captains mess. Janeways was coverted into a kitchen by Neelix because it was so close to the main ( officers? ) mess. Kirk seemed to eat in his cabin.

Indeed -- Thanks, Cary, for saying it more succinctly than I could. :)
