Babylon 5 - I'm finally going to do it

I have to say though, I don't think I'm going to watch crusade, unless we can work something out where I can borrow a copy of it from one of you or someone knows of a place online where I can see it. Evidently, the broadcast order is not the order I should be watching it, and I don't have the sets or the luxury to "mix 'n match" on the Blockbuster account because it's my parents. I did read (And it's easy to guess) that a cure was found so that was good. I do want to know though if there were any hints as to what that cure was or do I get that in Lost Tales or Legend of the Rangers (Those I will watch eventually).

Actually, there is no "correct" order for Crusade. No matter what order you watch it in, there will be continuity errors. The original broadcast order may not be the most ideal one, but many of us watched it that way the first time, and we got by. I wouldn't sweat it if you watch the series in a funky order.

I watched it in the order they were on the DVD's, but it's been a while. Were there continuty errors in that order?

I loved Call to Arms. Finally a post-S4 story where Sheridan is a renegade action bad ass and there's some sweet space battles. I thought the battle in this was amazing and a much higher visual quality than the normal series. AND it introduces my all time favorite character: GALEN!

It was nice seeing Bad-Ass Sheridan again. It's been quite a while. As for Galen, he was a pretty interesting character. Kind of liked the mystic tone of the first half, and I think they used the Technomages better here than in Geometry of Shadows.

I kinda wish there was an onscreen explanation for the new Jump effect. That thing looked really cool.
The jump effect changes EVERY time there's a new B5 production. ...
I think the reason is just down to advancements in graphics, even the look of hyperspace changes a little in LotR, which as I recall JMS said is much closer to how it should have looked from the get-go.

well at least the change in The Lost Tales is explained. although, i wish they hadn't...

The biggest one in that order was their use of the nanotech virus shield before they discovered it. Also I think Lochley's appearances may be out of order, although not drastically so. You also get Eilerson's character development seriously regressing.

Yeah, the most blatant ones...

In Episode 5 ("Patterns of the Souls") they're using a nanovirus shield that they are not going to develop until Episode 10 ("The Memory of War").

Episode 6 ("Rulings from the Tomb") gives the date as June 15, 2267, while Episode 12 ("Visitors from Down the Street") takes place on May 13, 2267.

In Episode 7 ("The Rules of the Game"), Gideon and Lochley have sex, while in Episode 13 ("Each Night I Dream of Home") they barely seem to know each other.

Episodes 1 ("War Zone") and 9 ("Racing the Night") also seem to contradict each other a bit. In "War Zone", Gideon is given command of his ship by a senator on Mars and he goes on his first mission right away. However, flashbacks in "Racing the Night" show Gideon participating in a conference with Alliance representatives (apparently on B5) after which he is given command of his ship by an Earthforce general (who even says something along the lines of "this is your new ship" and "take a look at your new ship").

It doesn't really become clear when these flashbacks were supposed to take place or why the Earthforce general should say something so awkward. Real-world reason: "Racing the Night" was originally intended as the pilot episode, but then JMS was pressured to do another pilot ("War Zone"). This is why Gideon is shown being introduced to his new ship two different ways at two different occasions.

You could also make an argument that the introduction of the Apocalypse Box takes place in reverse order.

^Let's watch the spoilers, remember tomalak hasn't seen Crusade yet.

You'd think that was it, but no. You also saw a bog standard Earth transport coming out of a jump point, using what looked like the exact same effect, so that can't be it.
Personally I prefer there to be no explanation and just chalk it up as an effects retcon, just like the original Delenn & G'Kar make-ups, the original EF uniforms & insignia and the super dramatic, moody and completely impractical lighting on B5 that made almost every room on the station look like a nightclub, complete with random spotlights that have no function whatsoever.

Hey, those spotlights were frickin' badass when all the other lights went out when Morden and Kosh ran into each other during "Signs and Portents."

Every other time, they made no damn sense, though.

Here's an interesting tidbit. I was perusing the Jane Killick guide books and for Divided Loyalties JMS says he had to spring the Talia trapdoor "9 episodes" early. This puts the revelation of Talia's sleeper personality at... "Point of No Return"! Perhaps she would have aided Nightwatch in some stunning betrayal or sabotaged the station defenses in the middle of "Severed Dreams"? And then Kosh would swoop in with his backup personality recording and restore her default settings.

Wouldn't 9 episodes after "Divided Loyalties" be "Dust to Dust"?

That's just how they roll in the 23rd century!

Somewhere around there, but Joe moved episodes around all the time so 9 episodes is probably just an approximation. It seems likely the whole betrayal plot would have tied in to the Severed Dreams arc.

I got Thirdspace in the mail today and looking forward to seeing it. Then I guess it's onto Crusade and the wacked up order which, based on comments here, shouldn't be a problem. I'm actually glad there was so much B5 stuff, not just the series. It keeps this thread going as long as possible, which is always a good thing. :)

Yeah. The Lost Tales will also be cool for you to review. It's one of the few attempts to make an add-on to an existing TV show years after that fact that worked.

Which should I work on first after Thirdspace? The Lost Tales or Crusade or does it matter.

Also, I've been doing some reading that there was a planned B5 movie that fell through in 2005. That kinda sucks because seeing a full length B5 (In the same vain as Serenity) would have been cool.

The B5 feature film was only going to star a new female character and Galen, who would have been recast. The rest would have been relegated to cameos or recast. Ugh.
