Big Brother (UK) Cancelled - Series 11 will be its last

This is very good news, indeed. That means it may be very well be America's BB the next to go. I'm tired of having BB on airwave for too long enough now.

According to Sarah Palin, the NHS is Orwellian. Mind you she probably doesn't know where the UK is let alone crack the spine of a George Orwell book.

Hate to break it you, but...

BIG BROTHER 11 is averaging 6.85 million viewers, a +5% gain over last year and has increased viewership among adults 18-34 by +6% versus last summer. All three BIG BROTHER 11 broadcasts are posting summer-to-summer growth. Tuesday's broadcast delivered BIG BROTHER 11's largest audience (7.98m) and highest ratings among key demographics on any night this summer.

You already know what my reply was....

I don't understand why Americans are obsessed with reality shows likes of Big Brother. It has becoming very annoying somewhat.

ive been discussing this on Digital Spy, and it seems to me, that BigBrother does not need a bradned TV channel like five or Living.

now its been passed on by the major channels I dont see any individual channel having a bigger brand than BigBrother itself, jsut setting up a TV channel on Sky called "BigBrother" might well work, 20hours of live stream, and 4 hours of things like highlights, eviction interview & BigBrothersLittleBrother, meanwhile you increase things like "text in" to control smaller elements of the house, and if the press do still continue publicity of the BigBrother house, you might just do ok.

Endermol would need a lot of money, a broadcasting licence, a slot on Sky/Freesat/Freeview EPGs (one or all), a slot on one of the transponders to actually broadcast
I know tons of rubbish channels manage it so it can't be that hard/expensive, but as a production company they're used to others paying them to make it, not putting it upfront themselves.

What? Is that possible? This is even more scarier than I can remember.

It's more or less been done in the past, by having a 20 hour live Big Brother on interactive streams then cutting away for the live shows, etc. But that was on Channel 4's satellite streams, it not at Endamol's cost.

Although I watch BB, it's become less of a social study and more of a real-life soap opera, putting people in the house who would most likely clash and even people who are mentally unstable.

Maybe with BB going, C4 can use the money to purchase the broadcasting rights for more sci-fi shows. I can recall the days when I would tune in to C4 to watch Stargate, for example. Now that BBC has given up most sci-fi shows to satellie channels, it could be a good opportunity.

in TV terms its the cheapest way to launch a TV channel, the only problem is what do you do with it the other 9 months?

without terrestrial TV / freeview coverage no Sky channel has anything to offer BigBrother / Endemol it might as well go it alone, on a branded TV channel, there can be no clearer message than "BigBrother will be the BigBrother Channel"

truth be told, I dont have any figures in front of me, just a vague idea, I feel is at least worth Endemol having a look at.

if Endemol seek to attract some publicity for this series, do an "all stars" format, with former Big Brother contestants.

I wouldn't be so sure. If Channel 4 were ponying up £50m a year for it they'd need to be doing some serious numbers to be making anything like that on their own channel.

and that is what they got from C4, they would get alot less from Living and even less from a smaller channel

Sure, but they'd be getting money for it. Where as if they started their own channel they'd have to spend money to get it started, plus get enough advertising revenue to make it worthwhile, and if you look at the ratings on even the more popular digital channels you're only talking 1/10 of what Channel 4 was getting, if you look at small channels then you're talking 1/50 or less, so I can't see it being worth the cost to start up a part time channel.

the BigBrother channel would make money outside of advertising, text votes on the bottom of the screen, to decide things in the house, the normal eviction phone vote, that kind of thing, and if product placement had been allowed they could have done that as well.

selling to another TV channel is the best way to quickly raise cash, but its not the only way.

I was walking around the new shopping centre in Bristol when I heard this, and I accidentally shouted "FINALLY!" Amazingly, I wasn't the only person to shout something along those lines when the news broke.

Looking forward to a summer without BB.

Just posted on E4's blog:
You've probably heard the news that the final ever Big Brother will air next summer. But wipe away that tear! The end of BB means more money for new drama - so there will be more stuff like Skins and Shameless, but also a whole batch of new shows, like Misfits which will be coming to E4 this November.
If you haven’t already heard about Misfits, it’s our latest drama series about a bunch of ASBO kids who develop weird superpowers after they are caught in a freak storm. But Heroes this ain’t. Nathan, Curtis, Alisha, Simon and Kelly aren’t exactly gonna be saving the world and they won’t be swapping their Reebok classics and ankle tags for capes and tights just yet. They soon realise that life’s not easy when you’re all that stands between good and evil… well, that and your curfew order.

Skins and Shameless will return in January, along with The Inbetweeners later next year and there are more new comedy drama series like these in the pipeline too.

Over on Channel 4, Shane Meadows - the writer/director behind This is England - will be making a drama just for TV. That’s a first! All the main characters from This Is England (Shaun, Gadget, Woody, Lol...) will return. Oh yeah, it's also set in 1986 which can only mean one thing: AWESOME 80s soundtrack!
