What happened to Chevy Chase?

The main cause for Chevy Chase's downslide in Hollywood has to do with the fact that he's always been known within the industry as being an egotistical dick.

If you look back, he was never that funny to begin with.

This too.

Bill Murray >>>>>> Chevy Chase

Speaking of which, there's that great story as told in the book, Live from New York, about the time Chevy came back to host SNL and got into a fight with Bill Murray. As John Landis puts it...

I've only been to SNL three times, and one time I was there, Chevy and Billy were having this huge screaming fight in the hallway, and Michael O'Donahue and Tom Davis were holding them back, and John and Danny jumped in because Chevy and Billy were really going to come to blows. I mean, it was a huge argument. And the thing I remember about Billy Murray -- I didn't know Bill Murray, but he's screaming, you know, foaming at the mouth, 'Fucking Chevy,' and in anger he says, 'Medium talent!' And I thought, 'Oh boy, that's funny. In anger he says 'medium talent.' That really impressed me. I went, 'So, Bill Murray -- wow, who is that guy?'
Read the whole thing here. In another account of the fight by Laraine Newman, Bill Murray is said to have yelled, "Why don't you fuck your wife once in awhile?!".

Incidentally, that scene between the two of them in Caddyshack was their public make-up.

Now he looks like plastic, fake Chevy Chase.

It's true, there's something about his face that actually makes him look like he's made out of wax.

The same thing that happened to Steve Martin.

They stopped doing all that coke and now they aren't funny.

I would say Steve Martin stopped playing the fool and tried doing more worthwhile passion projects. And then, like a lot of people who get their passion projects made, learned he has to do something more commercial and less desirable he doesn't want to do in order to pay for the things he does. Watching The Pink Panther is watching a man who'd rather be elsewhere.

Chevy Chase just found less and less work when people didn't like him anymore.

I really liked him in Spies Like Us. That bit with the Ronald Reagan movie was funny, the Paraguyan press conference, and the confrontation with the Ninjas.

I loved him in the Family vacation movies and Man of the House, but now the poor man has indeed aged(as we all do) and looks like he's had tons of plastic surgery.
I agree about Bill Murray though! :D He was histerical in Ghost Busters. Gotta love those typical 80 movies! :D

Dan Akroyd > John Belushi > Chevy Chase > Bill Murray > Adam Sandler

Sorry y'all, but Akroyd is just far funnier than either Chase or Murray could ever hope to be. Chase is also far funnier in the Vacation series than Murray is in anything except maybe Stripes and Ghostbusters.

I agree with this, but what of Leslie Nielson?

"Ah yes i remember. I had the lasagna."

Why is this in Misc.?

Supposedly Chevy Chase turned down the lead in American Beauty. I bet that could've changed his career path.

Never liked the smug, self-important bastard. I enjoyed Foul Play but never saw him in anything else that I cared for-Vacation included. He played an nasty character on Law and Order once-seemed too easy for him. Like he was channeling himself.

I seem to remember that he was injured in some of those prat falls that he took during SNL and had some back problems as a result.

He was never on the cast of SNL. If I didn't limit it to just the SNL cast members, then I'd have to put George Carlin, Robin Williams, Henny Youngman, Jack Benny, Groucho Marx, and Jeff Foxworthy in too.

"...and don't call me Shirley"
