Economy Is Delaying The SG1 And Altantis Movies

If Stargate cost $70,000,000 in 1994, it would have cost $84,973,009.45 in 2002 (end of season 5) or $86,909,581.64 (end of season 6), using this inflation calculator (which only goes up to values of ten million, so do a little math).

They may have already had the sets and actors, but they wouldn't have come free. Surely the cast would have earned more for a big screen feature film (look at how large the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation saw their paychecks increase for their motion pictures) than they earned for the television series. The sets would have been redressed for a larger screen, just as the sets for the Enterprise-D were for Star Trek: Generations. Visual effects would have to stand muster on 35mm film prints (more money).

I don't see a big screen version being made for less than $50,000,000 in 2002 or 2003, when the film was most likely. People weren't in the same position to want as make it (and thus, make it for less) as the cast and crew of Serenity were.

The thing is that we're jsut talking about a longer version of The Lost City and from they said was cut out I can't see it costing $50 million dollars. Martin Wood even filmed it movie style with two cameras in some scenes and the biggest cut scenes was the destruction of an aircraft carrier and it's task force and the President revealing the SGC to the public.

Feature films shoot on different schedules than television episodes. Even the direct to DVD films, though shot at a slower pace than the series, took far shorter than a feature film of equal size and scope to film. The budget would have been much more than was spent on the two episodes, even if only 20-30 extra minutes of material were added.

And this was the reason for the seven million spent on the straight to DVD movies but I still can't see a movie version of The Lost City costing $50 million.

Maybe they could use product placement to help with costs. In fact it would be a great idea to do something I have always figured would happen and that would be corporate American wanting to expand and do other business on other planets. Kind of like taking our idea of a global economy to the next step.

It would be a funny way to open the new movie but have SG-1 arrive on Chulak for the grand opening of the first McDonald's in space. It would be product placement but also humorous and frankly it would make sense, with how we know corporate Americaa works. We fans could speculate on what kind of currency the people of Chulak would use to get a Big Mac or whatnot but we don't need every little detail explained to us.

Little advice, don't become a comedian

What's so bad about my idea? I have always asumed that earth tech and earth products would someday make it out into these planets. Look at Tea'c. He likes earth movies and he even replaced his staff weapon and started using earth based weapons.

Look at this planet. You can find a McDonald's or a Burger King or some American food chain, in any country you go to. You can find American movies and clothes in any country you go to. Why would humans on these alien planets also, not be intrested in these things? Consumer's are consumer's and if there are people out there who might be intrested in your product then why not let them have access to it.

Perhaps McDonald's is a little to bold step. Perhaps the people on Chulak are buying earth based cars, instead. It's sort of taking the idea the Trust has of taking alien tech and using it to advance their prophets and putting it in reverse. We would be taking our tech and products and making a profit by selling it to new avenue of consumer's.

I can already see the scowl on Master Bra'tac's face.

Exactly! It would things like that is funny. Watching these proud warriors standing in line waiting for big mac's. The play area for kids would be a sparing room for kids to practice fighting skills with bright and colorful looking , toy staff weapons. Ronald McDonald would be altered to be more Jaffa looking, complete with Tatto on his head.

It might even make more sense though to open a movie theater. I know local movie theater's can be found on army bases. I asume they pay for the right to show these movie's. You could say the government struck a deal for the rights to show some movie's, without having to report how much it took at the gate. This way they could keep it secret as to were they are playing these movie's at.

^ Which might explain why they are considering releasing the SGU DVDs as two-sets per season, like BSG did.

Galactica only did that when they had especially long hiatuses, though. That's why it's only seasons two and four that are split into two sets each. Is SGU going to only air half a season, and then have an unbearably long hiatus, too? If so, bad move SyFy, bad move.

Although I don't have any proof to back it up, I was under the impression that they are only going to take a month-long hiatus to take a break at Christmas.

Well, if that's the case, and if MGM is splitting the DVD sets up anyway, then fuck 'em. I can purchase all 15 42-minute episodes of Firefly for $19.99. Ten 42-minute episodes that will probably go on "sale" for $35.99 and continue the franchise's trend of fewer and fewer special features per set? Gag.

^Is that an Atlantis thing? All the SG-1 sets from Season 4 onward and including the two DTV movies have been pretty packed with features.

Yeah it's all about money and not the long waits, they want money money money! it's why I said "fuck you!" to the BSG sets.

They used to have commentaries for every single episode. I haven't seen the latest season of Atlantis, but every set before that has been scaling back the number of commentaries.

But they have added for the first time deleted scenes on the season five set. And the commentaries have been IMO alittle dry in the final two sets.

There were deleted scenes on the season four set as well, at least for some episodes. I definitely recall deleted scenes from Trio. But the commentaries were a little lifeless on that year (not suprising, given the material, IMO).

Well I would've like to have seen more of the actors doing the commentaries, but it's just not the same without Peter Deluise and Martin Wood. But I stil do like the ones with Martin Gero.
