Watching DS9 with a First-Timer

This Saturday, I watched "Emissary" with one of my friends who has never seen the show before. Some of his reactions were quite interesting.

He likes Odo, and he said that Kira is a "beautiful woman" and "a fiery redhead." On first seeing Dukat, he remarked that he looks like the creature from Jeepers Creepers. He got a little annoyed with Prophet-Jake asking "What is this?" every two minutes, which I can easily understand. The "old man" comment was a little confusing, and even though we see the symbiont transfer later in the episode, it still is not crystal clear for a newcomer.

I'll pass on more reactions as we continue. In the meantime, if others have similar stories they'd like to share, go right ahead.

I started showing my friend DS9 about a month or so ago, and his early comments were that Bashir was annoying and useless, Sisko should be more like Samuel L. Jackson, and that Quark and Odo are his favorite characters. Once I pointed out Morn to him, he laughs everytime he sees him.

He didn't have too many story-related problems. He got into Trek fairly quickly after seeing the new movie. Since we all went to see it opening night, he's watched all 4 seasons of Enterprise, almost all 3 seasons of TOS, about a dozen TNG episodes, and around 35 DS9 episodes, 2 episodes of Voyager, plus movies 1-6 and an animated series episode.

OK I never saw Jeepers Creepers, so I googled it out of curioisity...

You aren't talking about this thing?! :cardie: :cardie: :guffaw: :wtf:

I mean, I understand your friend has never seen a Cardassian before... but really... words 'eyes' and 'check' come to mind... :cardie:

 Yeah. Although to me the Creeper looks somewhat like an insane Drazi (from "Babylon Five") in that photo...

^ It looks more like the Creature from the Black Lagoon to me. Well, more fangy, maybe.

We watched "Past Prologue" and "A Man Alone" last night. My friend, whom I shall call Eddie for purposes of this thread, had favorable reactions to both. I consider both episodes to be okay but among the least of what DS9 has to offer. If he is of like mind, then he should love what is to come.

It is rather obvious that the creepy old guy with the cloak and hood is the murderer in "A Man Alone." However, since it's not apparent that this is the real Ibudan, it's not too great an offense.

There's a nice moment when Sisko starts to tear into Jake for his prank, and Jake tells his dad, "I thought you didn't want to talk about it." Eddie's response: "Smart kid."
