This is just a little ship I designed specifically with the intent of making something different. However to justify the odd design, I decided to make it a Vulcan and Earth hybrid.

It's essentially a testbed vehicle for combined technologies between the two worlds. Though the emphasis is on Earth design due to early Vulcan technology export restrictions. It is obviously heavily inspired by the Deadalus Class...

This crude sketch showes a bowed and tapered warp support pylon, and I'm not entirely sure which route I want to take with that. Or another- suggestions?

The nacelles are strapped to the pylons with a large "O" type ring. My reason behind that was because they are experimenting with different warp engines, and the ring contains stress reading equipment, critical to helping them design contact points for easy nacelle swapping.

I wanted to keep the main ractors far from the primary hull, and as far as possible from the small shuttle deck, in keeping with the original Star Trek intent that these are volitile areas.

The odd shapped primary hull is based on Vulcan input (for me to justify something early, different, yet somewhat familiar)...

The shuttle deck is quite small, with only 2 shuttles for available for use.

The sketch of the "warp core" is not what I have in mind for the ship, it's just something I threw in there to fill some space.

Any comments or suggestions are welcome of course.

From what I can see it is a very interesting design. Any chance you could post a higher resolution scan?

An interesting take and a design as you state that is different but familiar.

Thanks for the positive comments. I'm still not sure about the pylons, and I'm still a little on the wall about her size. I've whipped up a quick little sketch where the pylon's leading edge side are straight, and the trailing sides are concaved (if my description makes sense)...

I also had a hell of a time posting it. Because my scanner is buggered up, I had to take a pic with my BlackBerry, send the image to my Facbook, copy that to my desktop, and send that image to my Wordpress account. Then I could link it to my thread here... (phew!)

I don't often comment on designs because I'm not usually too impressed. I like this a lot though and see some real promise with some more refinement.

A great design. I don't know why, but it reminds me of the Event Horizon. (That's a compliment, by the way) :bolian:

After you saying that, I can kind of see it. Probably the front pod (tall and long, but not so wide) and the narrow neck leading to the engineering pod, though not as ridiculously long. And yes, I would take that as a compliment, it's a cool ship :techman: :bolian:

I vaguely recall seeing that movie and recall liking it, but for the life of me, I can't remember what that ship looked like... Hey! I have the internet here. I'll look it up.

In the mean time, I put this together this morning. I've decided on the size (roughly), and I've given it a civilian science designation: UFPV (United Federation of Planets Vessel), keeping in spirit with it being an Earth/ Vulcan design. I've placed it around 2190, and in this picture, made the curves more TOSesque. It's got 16 decks, the impulse engines are just above the neck on the primary section, and the shuttle bay is on the stern. The lowest decks contain the warp reactors. Above that, storage decks. All the science and living spaces are in the primary section. There will be only two lifts. One running from the bridge to the lower sensor dome, and the other running from the shuttle bay to engineering. No horizontal lifts- they can all walk, the ship isn't that long...

The main deflector is of course in the lower hull, and I've included the three TOS enterprise bow windows/ sensors. In this case, they are dedicated sensors. The impulse deck has one reactor, as does the secondary hull, aside from the warp reactor. Space is limited, but in the even of a reactor failure in any location, limited power can be shunted to required equipment.

I really like this design. It would be cool to see it rendered in 3D. :bolian:

Thanks- maybe I'll dust off my google sketch-up and give it a try. Though my comp was seriously slow last time, and I couldn't do anything more complicated then a sphere. Though MadMan is a cool guy- maybe I can persuade him again... Though I would rather do it myself.

Here's a front view I just editted on to this response. It's missing a little detail- I'll add it when I draw the top elevation and put all three drawings together.

Any thoughts about the "neck"? I'm not certain I like that bowed look. A little too TNGesque for this era...

Very cool. Funny, I've been distracted by some projects recenty, and "used" the same reasoning as you, a "Vulcan/Federation" hybrid :). I like those O ring reinforcements. Perhaps you might keep the curved neck, and try out more curved lines/shapes throughout the design? I'm trying to remember, but that Vulcan ship in First Contact was quite "curvey".
    Anyway, very nice.

You have a nice design but I don't see the Vulcan tie in. With the exception of the shuttle that brought Spock to the Enterprise in TMP (which might have been a Federation/Starfleet design anyway) every Vulcan ship we saw onscreen had the ring warp engines.

I was expecting to see sonething like the Enterprise ringship seen on the Enterprise rec room wall in TMP.

I think your design should have been the direction the TV show Enterprise should have went in with the NX-01. The ship on Enterprise could have easily fit between TOS and the TOS movie era.

Even that shuttle may not have been exclusively Vulcan- See the shuttles in TMP's shuttle bay... The markings were Vulcan because Vulcan was using them too. On the other hand, it could have been a Terran, or Vulcan, or a design from any other Federation member that just happened to fit the mission specs for the Enterprise.

I think the connection was I trying to convey was a bit of a departure from the NX Class's singular hull, and a more sophisticated design then the Deadalus Class. In ST:FC, we see a very angular ship with three engine pods. Though nothing says they're warp related, I'm not a big three nacelle fan, but I liked the symetry behind the design.

So, from the front of my ship, it has that 3 sided balance that I was inspired with from ST:FC. As well as one of TNG's Romulan Warbird concepts.

I'm really stretching though the Vulcan/ Earth Hybrid, and it really boils down to a reason for me to justify a departure from the classic designs we're accustomed to, while still leaving the classic 2 hull, 2 nacelle look- that I really do like.

I know what you mean about the NX class- it seemed almost too sophisticated (on the outside), and too baren on the inside. I could see it looking like it would fit around TMP's era with a little tweaking. Keep it small, and scouty...

And thanks judexavier, I did change it slightly already, but did keep some of the curves. Thanks to everyone for the positive feedback.

I hopefully will have the rest of the pics up by tomorrow- and again, any advice is welcome. I may or may not take it, but there are so many people with great ideas on Trek BBS, that I'm willing to entertain ideas.

I'm sorry, but as a Earth/Vulcan hybrid, this ship's concept story just doesn't do anything for me. I don't see a theme, a connection to Vulcan, anything.

But as a starship, generally speaking, it's lovely, daring lines are giving me a woodie! That front view just sent shudders of ecstasy though my right brain.

Don't get me wrong, I like your design and think it would have been a better NX-01 than the NX-01 we got. I always liked the Deadalus design.
