Single best PS3 game?

Hi all. I'm very much a Sony gamer, but have been off-put by the price of the PS3 and the lack of backwards compatibility. However, with the announcement of the new slimmer design, coupled with a drop in price, I'm toying with the idea of trying to convince my mom to buy me one for my birthday (in November) and/or Christmas. However, because the system is about 100/200 dollars more than she usually spends on me and my siblilngs, if I do end up getting the system, it is likely that I will only end up being able to get one game to go along with it. To that end, I thought I would ask for suggestions on the single best PS3 game currently out there. To help narrow down the suggestions, keep in mind that I really enjoy RPGs and platform (action/adventure-type) games, and would be looking for something with lasting appeal, since it would likely be a while before I was able to afford more games.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Do you like combat games? StreetFighter IV should provide hours of fun playing by yourself, with AI, or with other people on the PS3 network.

Uncharted Drakes fortune (fantastic tomb raider/Indy jones hybrid).
Ratchet and Clank(don't be put off by the cartoon graphics, this game is brilliant)
Little big planet.(A must have game if you own a PS3)

Are we talking PS3 exclusives or just games in general?

The good exclusives currently out include Infamous, Little Big Planet, Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, Resistance 2, Killzone 2 and Valkyria Chronicles.

Then you have the multiplatformers like BlazBlue, Street Fighter IV, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Bioshock, Dead Space, Burnout Paradise, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, Grand Theft Auto IV, etc.

On a side note, if you have a Target near you, they update their clearance games/prices on Mondays.

AMEN to that one! The one PS3 exclusive that made me happy to be a PS3 owner was Infamous. That's one to take a look at.

The problem with a thread like this DigificWriter is that we all have different tastes and what might be good for me, you might not like at all. For example, there was a thread like this a couple of months ago and I recommended the two Resistance games. Well I was promptly told by more than one person that they were "bland, generic shooters." All I know is that I had a lot of fun with them, they were long games and I felt like I got my money's worth.

So it's hard for me to recommend them to you, you might like them like I did, or you might share the other people's opinions.

Valkyria Chronicles and Metal Gear Solid 4....if you've played the others at least.

But definitely Valkyria Chronicles

I knew starting this thread that I was going to get a lot of different suggestions, which is why I included the mention of the stuff that I particularly like so that it gave people a starting point, but still left it open-ended enough for people to suggest the games that they personally would want to own if they could only have one game to play for a while. There's also always the option of renting a game or games to fall back on should I be able to get the system like I'm hoping.

There are a few games that've been suggested thus far that sound like they'd be really fun and last me a while (Drake's Fortune, the Ratchet and Clank game, BlazBlue, and SF IV, to name a few), but keep it all coming.

I've traded in a lot of my PS3 games and now only have Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm (because I'm a big fan of the anime) and SF IV.

Valkyria Chronicles... one of the best games I have ever played. Every PS3 owner should definitely get it.

Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction are awesome as well.

And it's sequel, "Quest For Booty", is fun and cheap as well...

It looks like a lot of you guys have played Valkyria Chronicles (which sounds like an AWESOME game, BTW), but has anybody played any of the other RPGs that are out there right now for the PS3, like Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls IV, Eternal Sonata, or Sacred 2?

The best games on the system are IMO:
GTA IV
Rock Band 2
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (MW2 should be out by the time you get your PS3 though)

If you are looking for good western style RPGs Fallout and Oblivion are both pretty good choices, I can't speak towards goofy JRPGs though.

I've played both Fallout 3 and Oblivion and I enjoyed them both quite a bit.

I played Eternal Sonata for the 360 and it was awesome, so I expect the same for the PS3. Tales of Vesparia was another awesome RPG (best RPG of the generation so far if you ask me) for the 360 that is getting a PS3 port so be on the look out for that. As for Fallout 3, apparently the DLC isnt coming out for the PS3 so I never tried that version

Uncharted is $30 at Best Buy. It's now a "greatest hits" title, so that price should be across the board everywhere even though it's not as of yet.

$30 bucks for 'greatest hits' *sigh*

$20 from $50 in the PS2 pricing days was paying 40 percent, so naturally they instead take the dollar difference and applied it to the current gen prices, so you're paying $30 vs $60, or 50 percent.

I've pretty much loved every one I've played so far, both first and third parties. These include:

Assassin's Creed
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
Ghostbusters: The Video Game
Grand Theft Auto 4
Little Big Planet
Resistance: Fall of Man
Resistance 2
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

I'm really REALLY looking forward to Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Assassin's Creed II in the coming months.
